It's anticlimactic ending does work in the long run, and even though, there's only one or two scenes of action, this film does rank up there in the far-out exercises in science fiction.

It's a shame Bass didn't do more feature directorial work as Phase IV is certainly a step above many of the schlocky "when nature attacks" films that popped up throughout the 60's and 70's.

The one downfall of phase IV is its vague beginning and ending, making you have to use the middle to try and understand both, which is harder than it seems, and yes, it's a film about killer ants. Thanks in part to a solar phenomenon, ants start getting a bit feistier than usual. Two scientists get together (one good, one slowly starting to turn insane), along with a survivor of an ant ambush, in a scientific fortress to try figure out the actions of the ants who work endlessly to play mind tricks and slowly torture the team until they come out. What really makes this film fun is the amazing ant footage that was filmed, watching them work and do these scenes was really interesting. Good stuff, just needed to have more plot to it.

Gorgeous, creepy as hell (and remarkable not only for its time, but now) insect photography, all cleverly edited together to give the illusion of "performances" by the bugs. Fantastic electronic soundtrack as well.

Would make a great double feature with Silent Running or Dark Star.

It's a slow paced film with alot of desert shots, that recalls "Solaris" and "2001", more than "Them". The ending is one of the most bizzare I can remember in anything. A strange, thoughtfull movie about evolution, killer ants, and the end of the world, words I never got to string together in a sentence before, until now.

L'unique film de Saul Bass qui a notamment conçu le générique de Vertigo. Un classique de la science fiction des année 70. A voir absolument mais ce film est très rare.

Great midnight movie. Great poster. Reminded me of Demon Seed, with its use of sound, visuals and atmosphere. In fact, that would make a great double bill.
