Set in an Ulster border village, forgotten by time and progress, an Irish priest returns to his hometown after many years away to take over the local ministry. Once there he is reunited with his father and younger sibling, and the tale becomes one of ambition and betrayal.

Started strongly but started to unravel quickly, which was a shame as religious fervour, in what looked like 50's Northern Ireland could have made for a very strong
Convincing period detail provides scant consolation in a histrionic pot-boiler that is as entertaining as a sermon and as thrilling as tea with the vicar.
A dark film with powerful performances from all. Quiet a depressing film though.
A fairly drab social drama that demands appreciation of the influence of the Irish church. It does liven up a bit towards the end.

The movie itself was dark. Religious fanaticism to the max!!! Matthew, was of course, great.

Interesting morality tale, rings true anywhere fundamentalists or absolutists hold sway. A bit cartoonish and heavy-handed, though.
Matthew MacFadyen goes nuts as an overzealous Catholic priest trying to enforce his rule on a backward Irish village.
