(read more) Initially, I was going to watch White Tiger by Browning, but my copy is screwed up. So, looking through my Browning films for a suitable replacement, I forgot I had a dvd of this and that I hadnt watched it yet. I am glad I did: This is a beautiful looking film, extremely well shot. It is definitely more entertaining than Dracula. At only 60mins, it moves along quickly and does not have too many pointless scenes. My only complaint is that the "twist ending" is fairly silly and undercuts the moody atmosphere of the film.

Silly but entertaining. Some of the Lugosi tableaux are gorgeous, and the end is a genuine surprise.

Decent remake of the lost film. "London After Midnight". Included as 1 of 6 in the MGM "Legends of Horror" DVD Box Set, it contains a great restored scene featuring Elizabeth Allan.

Liked this mystery/spoof/horror movie just because it has a great Gothic atmosphere and has a better introduction for Lugosi than in "Dracula". Not at all what i expected - and the edning was a real let-down to boot. Certainly not the kind of film you would expect from Bela Lugosi or Tod Browning.

The vampire characters have a kind cartoonishness about them. Carol Borland mostly reminded me of Lily Munster. That's not intended as a compliment. This movie might have felt relatively fresh in 1935, but it feels very stale now.

With a different ending, this could have been an interesting curio: a sort-of supernatural murder mystery. Still, at least it gave us Carol Borland (man is she creepy looking). Still, I enjoyed it somewhat.

The ending is disappointing and renders the rest of the film hindsightedly problematic, but until that final minute this is a pretty good old vampire flick.
