It's amazing that this, based on a true story, all happened. The gullible, stoner surfer-lingoed idiots responsible for this heinous act just goes to show how the drug-world had a strong effect on the 80's, 90's, and abroad.
Un film qui traine n peu en longueur mais qui raconte une histoire intrigante et tétanisante. Interessant.
the performences were awesome...all of then did a great job, even Justin (who would tell)... but I don´t know It left me with some unanswered question...but great movie though!!!
What to say about 'Alpha Dog.' I' could start by saying that it's bad. But that's a blanket term I don't want to throw out yet. I' could start by saying that it's bad. But that's a blanket term I don't want to throw out yet. Director Nick (not John) Cassavetes (yes, 'The Notebook' guy (and the 'John Q' guy, a god-awful movie)) has no footing on what kind of story he's trying to tell/sell. It's one of those 'you wouldn't believe it if it wasn't a true story' type deals, but it doesn't feel like a true -or- manufactured story. I'll start with this: the cast is awesome; Emilie Hirsch, Justin Timberlake, Anton Yelchin, Ben FOSTER, even Shawn Hatosy, are all excellent, and do a fine job of portraying their characters. Bruce Willis and Sharon Stone are kick-ass as well. An, my god, Alan Thicke is in this for about .2 seconds; blink and you'll miss 'im. Amanda Seyfried and Olivia Wilde, who are fairly famous now, kick ass here as well, as does Dominique 'Lolita' Swain. A movie of this genre shouldn't be an ensemble/character piece, but it is; and this works/doesn't work. The action, which should work, is forced, un-macho, and doesn't drive the story. Oh, and then there's these cut scenes where they pretend they're shooting a documentary about the film's events that are spliced within the narrative. It took me out of it at first, but then Sharon Stone shows up in a fat suit and gives a -literally- heart-wrenching performance. It surprised me in a movie like this, which made even more of an impact. So, it's all over the place, but I like where some of its branches were going. The movie is about drug dealers/low-level thugs in Palm Springs, so there's a heavy drug-related plot. So, in one scene, two gangstas are having a chit-chat in a bedroom, and there's a clock on the nightstand. I look closely, rewind, zoom-in, and yup, the clock says 4:20. There's suttlety (too lazy to spell that right), and then there's 'really?' All in all, there's a great movie that wants to come out, but the product we get is more than watchable.

Willis gave some brief but very well delivered support and I even enjoyed Justin Timberlakes' character, despite it not being much of a stretch personality wise. The special effects in the scene where zak is killed were B-rate and distracted me, taking some of the impact of it away, and the soundtrack could have been more memorable.. but overall a worthwhile watch, if not for the story then for the performance of the central cast.
Critic Reviews
This movie is on fire. An edgy and startling film, definitely starts the 2007 movie year off with a bang!full review
There are in fact no bad performances in this picture. The events depicted are often ugly and sometimes repulsive, but Cassavetes never flinches from depicting them fullyfull review
Recovering from the Harlequin bathos of The Notebook, writer-director Nick Cassavetes directs this bogus-homeboy scenario as though his street cred depended on it.full review
Cassavetes -- a sometime actor himself -- doesn't seem to understand actors at all. From the finished product, it looks as if his preferred method of guiding his actors is to egg them on rather than nudge them toward restraint.full review
Alpha Dog is almost a sociological study of a youthful culture awash in freedom and steeped in violence, drugs, casual sex and offensive language. It also shines a light on parents who have abdicated their positions of guidance and discipline.full review
There's more voyeurism going on here, and less insight into a certain culture (the young and the wasted), than the filmmakers would probably admit to, but the performances are scarily real, and the outcome, well, is just scary.full review
Rather than turn the camera away when disaster strikes, [director Cassavetes] keeps his suffering characters in close, uninterrupted focus, pushing us squarely into their pain.full review
Timberlake walks off with the movie. Too bad it's not worth stealing.full review
