James MacAvoy plays impossibly naive Dr. James Garrigan, a Scottish doctor who comes to Uganda to escape his life, and starts working with a medical clinic in Mgambo, a small town in the beautiful countryside of Uganda. Through complete 'twist of fate', he ends up being Ugandan dictator Idi Amin's personal doctor and personal friend. Idi Amin is obsessed with all things Scottish and upon learning that James in Scottish, trusts him with all of his important decisions. Forest Whitaker does a fantastic job playing the megalomanic dictator, and rightly deserved an Oscar for his portrayal of the madman. James' character was too naive and put himself too easily into the hands of Amin, until it's too late. Even in the end, he does nothing to try and stand up for himself. He expects everyone else to save him, which does nothing to endear himself to the audience. I don't know if this was a deliberate attempt by the director, but I found it irritating and annoying. The other supporting characters weren't fleshed out enough and were more stereotypes as opposed to real characters. It's still worth watching and I'm glad that I rented it. I just wish it was better.
A horrible inside look at the life of Idi Amin and the pain he caused in Uganda.
pissed they didnt show the israli commandos storm the airport (what actually happened in history) but a great movie none the less
If you can't tell that Idi Amin is a raving lunatic and then you sleep with his wife then you deserve what you get. Forest Whitaker is towering but James McAvoy is annoying.
it's always hard to make movies based on real life events and real characters. And this one is the best I've seen so far. Perfectly crafted, mesmerizing performances.

Non mi è piaciuto molto Mcavoy mentre splendida è " Dana Scully" Anderson da bionda.
Non lo riguarderei mai più, molto truce ed alcune scene sono da vietare la visione ai 18 anni per la violenza...
Nicholas Garrigan: Why are you doing this?
Djonjo: Frankly, I don't know. You deserve to die. But dead, you can do nothing. Alive, you might just be able to redeem yourself.

Nicholas Garrigan: I don't understand.
Djonjo: I am tired of hatred, Doctor Garrigan. This country is drowning in it. We deserve better... Go home. Tell the world the truth about Amin. They will believe you; you are a white man.

Would have preferred the movie be completely fact based. not like there wasnt enough material to fill a movie. 3 stars...all for Forest!

The Last King of Scotland is a parable shocking in its truth, jolting in its lack of sentimentality, Shakespearean in its vision of the doctor's catastrophic flaw.full review
The film is phenomenally well directed by Kevin Macdonald and edited by Justine Wright to bring out every bit of scary volatility in the most casual interactions.full review
