(read more) Sarah Huttington (Jennifer Aniston), is on her way home to Pasadena for her sister Annies (Mena Suvari) wedding. Her fiance Jeff Daly (Mark Ruffalo) is with her, but Sarah wants them to wait with their engagement announcement until after Annies wedding. Sarah has never felt close to her family and she feels that she has never fitted in. Back in Pasadena she hears a rumor that "The Graduate" (book and movie) are based on her family. Sarah struggles suddenly with a lot of questions. Did her grandmother and her mom have flings with the same man just before her parents married? Is she a strange mans child; does this explain why she does not fit in? Was her mother happy? Is she too facing a loveless marriage? Her decision is to ask the man in this love triangle, Beau Burroughs (Kevin Costner). With Jeffs blessing, Sarah heads for San Francisco, looking for the key to her past and to her future.
I like Jennifer Aniston, but here she is a bit outside her comfort zone in one way. Anistons Sarah is a cheating, self centred and slightly unlikable person. And Aniston has troubles to carry those characteristics in a convincing manner. I think the plotline with having "The Graduate" as a backdrop is in a way a cheap shot to catch a ride on a classic so to say. The acting is good in general, and it is not an unpleasent movie to watch. But, "Rumor Has It" is a movie you will easily forget as well.

Very Funny, what happened to the real "Robinson" family from "The Graduate" 30 years later!!!
kind of silly, really. Who's going to sleep with your mum's and grandmum's boyfriend?
The idea of Costner being Aniston's dad (possibly) and them being attracted in some odd way... yeah... not a fan. Nor am I a fan of the whole "Graduate" back story. Aniston needs to start thinking of doing GOOD movies for a change... tired of this lame crap out of her. About as disturbing as "Derailed".
Not one of Aniston's best, but it was a rather sweet movie nonetheless; had a few laughs. The "break-up" I liked much better.
Critic Reviews
A funny idea, alas, doesn't necessarily make for a funny movie.full review
It fails artistically but also philosophically, in that it rebuts the spirit of the earlier film, while offering nothing attractive in its place.full review
The real weak point is Reiner's listless direction, with too few scenes that almost gel and too many that fall flat.full review
Jesus may love Mrs. Robinson more than she will know, but some filmmakers don't seem to, based on their insistence on reviving her for the pallid and plodding Rumor Has It.full review
This is not a great movie, but it's very watchable and has some good laughs.full review
Buried deep inside this misbegotten comedy is the glimmer of an idea.full review
A rhythm-less, laugh-less mess that mixes the big-screen Bewitched's post-modern nonsense with shades of Spanking the Monkey's interfamily attractions.full review
