Unfolds like a bad dream, with leaps in logic and outlandish plot-twists sailing by at regular intervals and, though it suffers from some trite dialogue and a few shonky performances and effects, the visual invention and rapid escalation of peculiarity in plot (at odds with the micro-budget production values) holds attention with ease.

This film is probably best remembered for Andy Kaufman's appearance in it as a cop who goes crazy in New York's St Patrick's Day parade and starts shooting down his brother officers with his service revolver.

Very perverse film written and directed by Larry Cohen. Religious cop, Tony Lo Bianca, suspects that a wave of mysterious snipings and other murders can be traced to Richard Lynch playing the subject of a woman's impregnation by, you guessed it, aliens. Lynch has developed extraordinary powers and is using them to cause ordinary New Yorkers to carry out murders on behalf of "god" to impress a group of wealthy businessmen to back his plans for world domination. They don't make plots like that anymore.

One of the best films from the great Larry Cohen. Shows just how silly religion can be. Much deeper than one may think.

(read more) One of the most bizarre movies you're ever likely to see, this may be the peak of weirdness for the wonderful Larry Cohen; even when his films are not entirely successful, they're ALWAYS imaginative and interesting. Poor Tony Lo Bianco just thinks he's investigating a bizarre series of murders, but it winds up leading him to a huge revelation about himself that I dare not reveal; needless to say, I'd prefer not to believe that God is a sadistic, bloodthirsty bastard who looks like Richard Lynch! Containing enough ideas for ten movies, this film may not always make a lot of sense, but it's consistently entertaining.

A cult classic from the greatest film period for America, the 1970s. I really like the look of Larry Cohen's films of this period. They have a gritty New York look that. I really like the look of Larry Cohen's films of this period. They have a gritty New York look that. I heard Larry Cohen say that the story came out of an idea of Superman. What if Clark Kent discovered that he was different from everyone else and could do things that no else could do, like fly and the whole superhuman strength thing. In the Christian society that he was brought up in, wouldn't he possibly think he was a god? I think M. Night Shamalayn basically took this kind of story and made his movie "Unbreakable." The difference being that I find I do not like any of his films. It's been said also that this film was an influence on the X Files with the idea of aliens existing among us and possibly corporate involvement. This film also has a cameo by one of my favourites, Andy Kaufman, and a brainwashed cop.

It has a creepy vibe that starts with the opening sniper scene and proceeds through the end of film, and the film includes many twists and turns that you won't see coming. Another great Cohen flick. I love the story line and Andy Kaufman really gives a great performance. Slick and bizzare, this is a cool film.
