However, in this particular instance it doesn’t quite have the attributes that distinguish it from other films in the genre. It’s a poor substitute for The Great Ziegfeld, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Night and Day, etc. It’s still entertaining; just less so. June Allyson is great as always. There are some good musical numbers, but any film that only uses Cyd Charisse for a matter of seconds is not quite right in my book. Still, it is a good ending.

There is quite the stellar cast, some performances better than others, but if you like musical numbers, you may enjoy this if you have the patience to sit through it. I found it nice to see Angela Lansbury, to see a couple other good performers I never knew about, and of course Frank Sinatra at the very end, but it was a little rough getting through some of them and the storyline is rather weak. Aside from this, it is a traditionally respectful tribute to the music writer Jerome Kern.

While it's not the greatest old-school musical I've ever seen, the star-studded cast performing the amazing music of Jerome Kern makes up for it. A nice historical bio of Kern's life, but not the most enthralling of films.
