The greatest and most beautiful film of Francesco Rosis career with yet another superb performance by Gian-Maria Volonte.

Volonte is on form as the exiled Carlo Levi. Rosi evokes the kind of grim fortitude of southern Italy masterfully.

I read the book "cristo si e fermato a eboli" about Levi's exile to Southern Italy. The story, while a great one, is so internal that it makes a poor choice for film adaptation.

This is how they used to make films when people's emotions were complex and human and their attention spans longer. Beautiful music.

The film is long in the sense that there are many silent parts where you take in the surroundings, the simple and difficult life of the people back then. It grows on you.
