Overall, I liked it, didn't love it. Keanu Reeves should insist on being rotoscoped in every movie, since he's never been so animated in any previous film.

It looked poor because little was done post to actually make the characters speech consistent in successive frames. They lack human expressions. Since it appears each frame is processed on it's own with little relation to the rest, as scenes move on small details keep annoyingly flickering. This is immensely distracting and unrealistic. There should be artists touching up each frame, and then again as a moving scene to keep such annoyances to a minimum. So after all that and sitting down to watch this, I was hugely disappointed by a bland, pointless story.

The cast is superb, each delivering unusual and adept performances. The story is bizarre, complex and dramatic and the ending particularly thought provoking. Was hyped up amongst my friendship group and easily met all requirements for a great film. The only down point? A strange and pointless sex scene. Other than that it's a brave film.
Mostly boring weird druggie crap. The animation is slightly interesting, but I just hated all the characters. The plot is supposed to be twisty, but just produces annoying confusion.
While visually striking, this fails to hold the attention for its full running time due to its labyrinthine story.

The first film to capture the author's transience and his art.full review
One of the most disturbing antidrug public service announcements ever produced.full review
A Scanner Darkly is a visually riveting mind-bender inspired by drug-induced experiences.full review
Richard Linklater's squiggly new film, A Scanner Darkly, is an ambitious attempt to find the right visual style to render the experience of drug addiction and the paranoid vision of novelist Philip K. Dick, into a distinctive visual form.full review
This is a movie about losing one's grip and like any addict's story, it's boring, ugly, sad, and terribly human. And surprisingly funny.full review
[A] real-world movie that's essentially been spray-painted, Scanner has turned its back on one of animation's greatest strengths: the playful elasticity that allows characters to stretch and soar in impossible ways.full review
Embedded in the visionary headtrip of A Scanner Darkly is a hotly political call to arms.full review
It's a pity it doesn't have more oomph, because the book is arguably Dick's masterpiece, and as brain-rattling today as when it came out in 1977.full review
The movie probably involves more dialogue and less action than some people will expect; it's about the nature of a life where you can never be sure what or who is real.full review
