Let me tell you something, this movie could've been a CONTENDER for the Oscars!
And it was!
And it won some!

The idea of brotherhood and sacrifice fits well in the setting of mob infiltration of the longshoremen' union; specifically in Terry's (Brando) struggle with his easy life and the advantages he takes colliding with his emerging conscience and regret over his lost future. Many memorable scenes:
- Terry reveals to Edie he was the set-up man in her brother's death
- The famous scene in the back seat of the cab with his brother, Charley, when Terry lashes out about having to take the dive and missing his title shot.
- Terry and Edie walking in the park and he pick her glove up and puts it on.
- The last sequence of the film.
The film was truly a treat to see. The storyline was something that had never been done before with a meaning. The entire thing was just well written. Enough said.

It is a highly entertaining and endearing film, with a great story and social commentary on crime and corruption. It has a beautiful landscape, and a unique film experience. It crosses genres quite flawlessly, having a lot of film noir techniques to go along with it.
This is my Father's all time favorite film. I watched many times over the years and I never get tired of it. It is a great film.
Brando rightfully won the Best Actor oscar for his brilliant performance in this great film.
A well-directed, complex morality tale with a great performance from Marlon Brando. Definitely deserves its place amongst the classics.

I love Brando and Malden together, and this is their best, in my opinion. I had enjoyed the movie for years when I happened upon a bio of Elia Kazan, the director, who was involved in McCarthy's anti-communist activities in the 50s, and was criticized for 'naming names.' Allegedly, this movie was his defense to those criticism. That spoiled it a little for me; however, it is still a remarkable piece of cinema with a stellar (pardon the pun) performance from Brando, and his supporting cast of Maldon, Saint and Cobb were excellent too.
Fairly enjoyable; the cast was pretty excellent, and I imagine the plot was groundbreaking in 1954, but I wasn't awestruck. Still, though, I'd highly encourage folks to watch it.
While I can appreciate this movie for what it is, I was not blown away. Brando, Malden and Cobb were all great and so was most of the movie, but nothing said to me "This is your kind of movie"
Eva Marie Saint was kind of annoying, but Marlon Brando more than makes up for it <3
It's a good movie. Not sure I will call it one of the greats of all-time, but I bet for 1954, it was pretty spectacular. One thing hasn't changed. The character banker JP Morgan was a scumbag in 1954. Once a thief, always a thief...
