Extremely romantic and clever. Great script and on-location scenes. I really liked the new adaptation they made for TV with Timothy Spall and his son.
was really dissapointed with this, what was with the stilted script and the lack of acting! i was expecting more from the cast! struggled to get to the end, surely this story could be told better??
I remember lots of people telling me to see this in 1985. Why it took me until 2009 to agree remains a mystery, but this was a really great film. Highly recommended.
"There is one perfect view, and that is the sky over our heads."
A Room with a View seems to be a metaphor for view of life.

It has many art forms to it; baroque meets Monte.
I do believe it is a wonderful story, and it keeps me interested, but as they would say, 'I am rather bored of these things.' Yet it does a a wistful romance to it.
On the other hand, as you go on in the movie, it begins to have an opportunity to reach an interest with these characters.

Forster's classic novel presents several story lines interwoven through each character's rules of what is proper and English of the time. The love story is truly more about one letting go of inhibitions and following the heart. Merchant Ivory go as far as delving into Forester's paganistic love of nature with the colorful art direction and cinematography. But even without it, the lovelorn Mr. Emerson(played by Julian Sands) personifies Pan's whimsical self through actions and words. Both the Italian and English countryside come alive in the Blue Ray format of this film. And, if that's not enough, Helena Bonham Carter fans can cherish in one of her early period pieces! Bellissimo!
This is a first class movie from script, to costumes, to music to actors. I've watched this movie more times than I can count. It's a true classic.
Love triumphs over convention and suprisingly laugh out loud funny in places. Plus Julian Sands jumping naked into a pond...

I think Julian Sands and Helena Bonham Carter do a good job of convincing me of the reality of that opportunity in this period.
I am particularly taken by the innocent horseplay of men in the swimming hole scene during Victorian pre-homophobic definitions of friendship boundaries among males... and the entirety of Julian Sands character. Both romantically noble and decisive... too rare a combination in current times. Judi Dench always shines.
I think we can all agree that Daniel Day-Lewis kicked Julian Sands's ass. He was perfect as Cecil and Sands sucked it up as George. The scene where he's protesting his love to Lucy looks more like an audition tape than an actual scene in a movie. And... The scene where he's protesting his love to Lucy looks more like an audition tape than an actual scene in a movie. And what was up with that scene where he's standing in a tree shouting? Terrible, terrible scene. The cast was perfect aside from Sands: Helena Bonham Carter, Maggie Smith, Denholm Elliot, Simon Callow, Judi Dench and so on were wonderful. This is an excellent adaptation of the book, even with a terrible George.
Critic Reviews
It is an intellectual film, but intellectual about emotions: It encourages us to think about how we feel, instead of simply acting on our feelings.full review
