It was the first American film to dramatize the Warsaw Ghetto uprising of 1943, during which an underground collective of Polish Jews dared to defy the Nazis. Hank Azaria leads an all-star cast as resistance leader Mordecai Anielewicz, and the film follows his close-knit collaborators (including David Schwimmer and Leelee Sobieski) and their battle against the Nazi general (Jon Voight) assigned to clear all Jews from Warsaw. The uprising was eventually crushed (some heartbreaking outcomes are listed in the closing credits), but director Jon Avnet expertly maintains a sense of courage and hope amidst the palpable horror of the Warsaw Ghetto. Combining physical and historical accuracy with intimate character details, Uprising is suspenseful without being sensational, thus honoring one of the greatest symbolic victories in all of Jewish history. --Jeff Shannon

Good movie...I would have rathered a better ending, but after all you can't change what really happened, and there was no good ending in real life.

Dieses and starvation are rampant as is abuse by German soldiers and the Jewish Police who collaberate with the Nazi's. After mass deportations to Treblinka begin. part of Hitler's Final Solution, the Jews of Warsaw realize they have but one choice, to take up arms and make their tormentors pay dearly for every life they take...thus begins the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, destined to last 6 weeks (longer then Polands Armed Forces lasted, and about as long as France fought before surrendiring), the largest instance of Jewish resistance to the Final Solution.
Excellent depiction of the events leading up to and during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, that sadly leaves out much. Filmed in the same style as most modern war movies, the cast here is good. Hank Azaria as Mordechai Anielewicz leader of the Jewish Fighting Group (ZOB, the only group shown though others are alluded to, historically ZOB fought alongside the ZZW or Jewish Military League), and David Schwimmer as his deputy. Leelee Sobieski and Stephen Moyer play young resistance fighters. Donald Sutherland (possably the strongest performance) is Adam Czerniakow head of the Ghetto Administration who fears violence will only worsen the plight of the Jews and attempts to placate the Nazi's. Jon Voight is SS Gen. Jurgen Stroop who commanded Axis forces during the Uprising, well Cary Elwes turns in a great performance as Fritz Hippler a Nazi Propagandist (and director of The Eternal Jew a film designed to help pave the way for the Holocaust).
Sadly there are a couple major flaws. In an effort to make the Uprising seem even more heroic director Jon Avnet depicts the Germans as Wehrmacht soldiers backed by Tiger tanks. Historically the German forces consisted of SS Police, reserve units of the Wehrmacht, trainees, and police from not only Warsaw but Latvia, Lithuania and Ukrainian Police. These where not the elite of ether the Wehrmacht or SS, though this in no way diminshes the courage of the Ghetto Fighters. More unforgivable is the depiction of the Poles who are shown as indifferent to the Jews in the Ghetto, ignoring the fighting there, leaving them to die. In reality the Polish Home Army and the Communist People's Guard supported the Ghetto Fighters (and vice-versa) attacking German units outside the Ghetto and even taking part in the fighting in the Ghetto. In addition Henryk Iwanski of the Home Army smuggled in supplies, helped smuggle Jews out, took part and was wounded in the fighting and lost his brother and son in the fighting. In 1964 he was bestowed with the title Rightious Amongst the Nations by Israel. That Iwanski and the Home Army where not included is irksome. That the Polish resistances contributions to the Uprising are ignored, and the Home Army depicted as indifferent is unforgivable.
Still this is one of the few movies to depict this chapter of World War II so if you have an interest in this type of movie do seek it out.
Es una tv-movie estupenda,me la compré por el reparto y no te defrauda. No me canso de ver buen cine histórico con tantos héroes anónimos.

(read more) Very impressive for a TV movie with seemingly no expense spared when it came to sets, costumes, big name stars and pyrotechnics. A thoroughly authentic-looking take on the 1943 Warsaw ghetto uprising where several determined groups of Polish Jews fought against vastly more numerous and powerful German forces for the better part of five months. The cast are without exception excellent, especially Hank Azaria (better known as the voice of Chief Wiggum, Apu and Moe amongst other on The Simpsons), David Schwimmer and Donald Sutherland. There were many other big names in the cast - Cary Elwes, Radha Mitchell, Jon Voight, Sadie Frost, Leelee Sobieski - all employing what were to my ears faultless Polish or German accents. Unsurprisingly given the TV-movie parameters, the film doesn't really convey the true horrors of the mass-deportations, brutality, neglect and violence faced by the Jewish population compared to say, Schindler's List but it does get damn close with some very memorable moments such as the violin scene and shots of the recently deceased being swiftly spripped naked by people desperate for anything to help them survive. When the fighting starts guns chatter, molotov cocktails are thrown, bombs explode and buildings crumble - a remarkable level of violence. Perhaps a touch too long at two and a half hours but that only shows us more of a brave, if ultimately hopeless resistance from a proud people against a ruthless enemy and does its part in telling the tale of this little-known but important event.

But it is a gripping reenactment of my favourite historical story: the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. If I could be any historical hero, I would want to be a member of the ZOB. Everything I love about that story, and all the lessons there are to learn from it, are in this film.

The story of the ghetto of Warsaw during WWII. Tough but extremely well done.
