Not quite as good but close, Pacino invests nearly the same level of bravado in this character as Scarface! This time he actually ends up being the good guy that you root for in the end. Unlike Scarfaces downward spiral, Carlito is is trying to ascend to the high road and become a legitimate guy and escape his criminal past only to be dragged back into the mire of the world he came from!
Special marks go to Penn as a real stand out with his portrayal of the coke sniffing dirty lawyer he delivers a real Oscar worthy performance and definitely one of the great roles of his career.
Like Scarface the pace and violence is unrelenting and brutal with a great final shoot out in Grand Central Station!
Pacino gives a brilliant performance as Carlito Brigante.. betrayal..action..drama..love..and criminal world of a gangster..

perfect script by David Koepp ... with superb soundtrack and intelligent dialogue...now i love de palma an extraordinary director.. he really emphasized the emotions on how to survive in a dangerous gangster's world...a genius work..a must see..
Grande Depalma , su mejor pelicula de los noventas , inolvidable la persecusiòn final
Love this movie one of the very best in the film industry! Quality plot by the legendary Brian de Palma whilst Al Pacino and Sean Penn are on tremendous form in this.
The words "Screenplay by David Koepp" are never a good way to start a movie, and this one stayed true to form. Sean Penn's magnificently weaselly performance and DePalma's magical ability to ratchet up tension just barely manage to rescue this film ...
