Rarely is one man's struggle for inner peace so poignantly displayed as in this engrossingly sexy and unflinchingly violent love story. Lyric is the young woman who rekindles the dreams of a man tormented by a father's alcoholic violence now perpetuated by an unstable brother. Allen Payne and Jada Pinkett make for one of the screen's most memorable duos in the title roles. Each brings emotional intensity paired with powerful sexuality to their roles. Director Doug McHenry speaks to the 1990s by deftly balancing the story's heightened drama with just enough hope to give it impact. --Rochelle O'Gorman

The ensemble cast performed pretty well in this, especially Allen Payne and Jada Pinkett. A very great example of Black Cinema that holds up well.

Yeah, you pretty much know how these movies end and if they don't end well, I get irritated, because I go to "escape reality" when I go to this type of movie, not get hit over the head with it. And Allen Payne's a** looked great!! That was worth 5 stars!
One of the best black love stories I've ever seen. Love conquers all. My favorite movie of all time.

Riveting performances, tailored with a tragic love story make this a classic. Doug McHenry values the personal relationship of love and family in this very moving film. I don't understand why this film failed to receive as much critical acclaim as its predecessors (New Jack City, Boyz N Da Hood, Menace to Society).
unmissable! landmark movie in black film! jada, treach, woodbine, whitaker and payne knock it out the park!
