The only adults are old servants and two authoritarian teachers. Obedience is paramount. Those caught trying to escape are either swallowed up by the horrors of the outside world or condemned to serve the other girls within the school walls for the rest of their lives. The girls suffer various indignities of school life, longing to get outside. However, the eldest girls disappear each night for several hours under orders not to reveal their whereabouts to the others. In the end, we learn how these girls step into adulthood in this familiar, but clearly alternate, universe.

This has to be one of the most intensely boring films I've ever seen...during the movie you keep on wondering why, what is the goal of all this...and still wondering at the end...

Tempo on hidas ja varsinkin alkupuoliskolla liiankin hidas. olin jattaa elokuvan kesken tasta syysta, mutta taistelin itseni lapi. en uskalla suositella tata kellekkaan vaikka loppuun paastya olikin ihan hyva fiilis
A spectacular vision of a girl's sexual awakening.
Gotta read the novel (by Frank Wedekind).
The cinematographer Benoît Debie gets special credit.

The film is about a young girls journey from innocence to adolecence. Its a beautifully photographed film but the symbolism became a little heavy handed at times, as I felt like Lucile Hadzihalilovic just went overboard. Maybe if I was a woman, I would find this film more compelling than I did, as it truly is a film about being a woman.
About being a woman. From mental birth through sexual awakening to adolescence. A beautiful film but lacks tension. Women understand this better...
An intriguing art movie. Do not watch if you require your movies to have a story-line, narrative, or resolution!
"Innocence" is a beautifully photographed and edited allegory steeped in intrigue and understated biological angst.

The biggest strength of the film is its ambiguity throughout, which also means it demands a lot from the viewer. Perhaps the most satisfying interpretation of the film is as a dreamlike and very symbolic metaphor of the change from childhood to adolescence from a female perspective. In terms of story, it does seem like short film material stretched a bit too long at times, but it is technically marvellous with a gorgeous, earthy colour pallette shot with natural light.
A very curious and odd story told in an enchantingly beautiful way. Difficult to interpret, yet a bit obvious in its symbolism. Still, a very intense and commendably challenging movie.
Caminar el corazon adolescente en un sendero ahora sin lamparas ni nada que nos guie, probablemente impllicara perdernos, maravillosamente perdernos, en los sonidos de nuestro propio recuerdo...
