i saw this in theaters with a group of friends - and we were the only ones in the room. it was great fun. and a decent movie.
Kids vandalize and subvert a real estate developer. Based on a popular book, but pretty mild as a movie. My 10-year-old loved it.

Hopefully the Newberry Honor book from which this is based off of is much better than the movie (I've never read it), because the story was so simple, the acting and the plot was rather stale and boring, and the dialogue was so cheesy. The only reason that I was laughing at this film was because of its riduculousness. It has a good message about wildlife...that's probably the only good thing about it. But--then again, what do you expect from a family-friendly children's movie?
Never as good as the book, of course, but I actually did like this interpretation. Jimmy Buffett soundtrack was a nice touch.
Critic Reviews
There is nothing objectionable in this family film, but it doesn't seem to appreciate the intelligence and savvy of its youthful audience. Kids can spot a silly stereotypical character as fast as the rest of us.full review
The movie pretends to take a kids' point of view, but it treats kids like idiots.full review
The movie is unessential at best. But the Everglades -- and the owls that live nearby -- are irresistible.full review
The goal is apparently a double exercise in heartfelt lessons and deep hilarity, but it's hard to tell because the pace feels so lethargic.full review
Hoot tells kids they can make a difference in this world, and that's worth a hundred Ice Age 2's.full review
Hoot has its heart in the right place, but I have been unable to locate its brain.full review
A modest, lightly comic film that succeeds on sheer good faith.full review
