By accident, he gets involved with a preacher (Morgan Freeman) who has his own demons; Jordan ends up as the custodian of a soup kitchen with a parking lot that also serves patrons of a nearby club, so long as those patrons are willing to sit through 15 minutes of a sermon by the preacher. The narrative depends on a lot of coincidences and some implausible behavior--but the story is secondary. Levity focuses on the characters, which are brought to life by the excellent cast (including Kirsten Dunst as a self-destructive club-goer). The movie lays out its themes of redemption and atonement a bit heavily, but it creates some very human moments along the way. --Bret Fetzer

I felt symphaty toward Manuel and I think he was a heart-breaking character. I've never killed anyone, but I have made smaller mistakes, and I think this movie depicts the feeling of remorse pretty well and it was easy to relate to Manuel. I was pleased with the cast and their excellent performances, especially Billy Bob Thornton's. All in all I think this was a pretty sad movie. Regretting one mistake for the rest of our life could be painful. The end was touching when Manuel took a bullet for Abney, and despite everything, Adele took him to the hospital. So it was a happy ending, 'cause he finally confessed and recieved forgivness?
The performances do make this watchable, but the redemption storyline is light-weight and for the most part lacking depth.
This is what human reformation is about... reformation of the soul and the quality of the human being... Never thought it would end up being this great a movie, but at the end of it all, it left imprints of the lesson it wanted to teach..

One of those movies where a bunch of high-profile actors get together and lower their asking prices in exchange for doing something they can classify as "artistic." Too bad this movie is nothing of the sort.
Superb movie! Not a single flaw from any point of view! Higly recommended!
All about redemption, Levity is not a bad movie. Lots of stars, Billy Bob Thornton, Kirsten Dust, Morgan Freeman... It's not the greatest, but the look and feel of it along with the great acting make it a decent movie.
A real piece of shit. Don't bring religion into a film if you can't back up the goods.
Critic Reviews
Corny in its use of symbolism and coincidence, marred by the deadpan performance of its hero, it seems more like a parody than a parable.full review
There is not a moment of authentic observation in the film; the director has assembled his characters out of stock melodrama.full review
Solomon's agnosticism on the subjects of atonement and redemption -- the precise areas of the movie's investigation -- makes the filmmaker as paralyzed as his lead character.full review
This quiet story occasionally resounds with emotion, and Solomon is a talent to watch.full review
It's an intriguing movie, and Thornton's performance is both fascinating and maddening.full review
Mr. Thornton's ostentatious restraint and his bottomless melancholy cry out for a mask and cape, and a few judicious special effects might have provided some relief, or at least helped the movie justify its title.full review
Thornton's sturdy performance and Solomon's assured directorial deliberateness give Manuel's quest for levity and absolution a palpable sense of agonized longing.full review
