While there is some very interesting material on beekeeping, this is essentially a good story about a somewhat dysfunctional family. Ulee is a widower raising his two granddaughters on his own while his son is in prison and his daughter-in-law has run off.
The cast includes Patricia Richardson (Home Improvement) as a Nurse that lives next door and a potential love interest for Ulee. While Ulee's eldest daughter is played by Jessica Biel in one of her first film roles ,
I really appreciated the depiction of a character acting heroically in the face of adversity without resorting to the violence that is so common in many hollywood pictures.
The film was written, directed, edited and shot by Victor Nunez on a very limited budget, but I did not find any such limitations at all obvious in the execution.
Features an Oscar nominated performance from Peter Fonda, who won numerous awards for the role including a Golden Globe.
Nunez is a master at rendering emotionally complex, ordinary folk into the kind of unassuming heroes that don't much appear in American films anymore.
Very nice and toned down with Fonda as the man of few words who tries to protect his family. Not a movie with the big bangs but a good story and good performances.

A beautiful and realistic depiction of a single individual taking the responsibility of holding it all together, even if it is sort of done with bailing wire. Go Ulee. A fine central metaphor in this film, too.

The shot selection and cinematography aren't singularly impressive, but they are a perfect complement to not take away the audience's attention away from most important part of the film, which is character development. After seeing this, I'm glad the Academy nominated Fonda for his role. Definitely a humbling character his sister would dare not touch these days.
A potentially compelling plot undercut by a poor supporting cast. As a tale of Florida bayou dysfunction, it probably rates somewhere between "Night Moves" and "Adpatation."
very good film. understated story with understated dialog but rich in redemption. makes the father in me get weepy.
Peter Fonda plays a sort of sexy beekeeping grandfather in this beautifully, all super golden, story.
