When the latter's character, a deeply regretful and changed man, gets out of jail, Nicholson, as the vengeful dad, decides to go after him. As a director, Penn is not so good with fluid storytelling and camera clichés, but he is amazing as an actor's director. The onscreen reteaming of former real-life lovers Nicholson and Huston is more than just a voyeuristic exercise: Penn ingeniously uses the duo's palpable friction to bring an often horrifying reality to the pain of a dead relationship. --Tom Keogh

There are a few moments in this movie where the photography is brilliant! Great performances throughout! I personally enjoyed the story very much, but I don't think that many people would find it palatable or very 'relatable'. Very dark themes.
strong movie and performances. the execution is a bit clumsy at times. but i mostly liked the slow-mo scenes where nicholson walks down the street etc. the ending was not entirely believable to me.

No great talent behind Sean Penn's first flick, in the way it was filmed anyway. Penn's use of slow motion is more often cheesy than effective. And there is a lot of it.
I will say the writing is great and the performances are all amazing. But the movie is kinda dull and flat, there is a couple scenes that are exciting and stuff, but the ending is just stupid. It just doesn't fit, is totally anti-climatic, and just blows. Shame too, the last part of the movie leading up to the ending is quite good. Oh well. Penn talent behind the camera could only get better after this.
Sean Penn is one of my favourite filmmakers out there. The movie drags a little but is powerful nevertheless.
Well-intentioned but quite flawed. Plot is slow, inconsistent and at times confusing. Fairly boring actually.
Can't fault the acting though - Jack Nicholson, David Morse, Anjelica Huston and Robin Wright Penn are excellent.
nothing really special from Sean Penn..a predictable story made watchable due to the performances of the cast!
This was a look inside of characters who are working their way through darkness with one looking for redemtion and the other understanding.

Traitement sensible d'un sujet difficile, dont le cinema et l'humanite sortent grandis.
Un po' troppo lento e musica fuori posto ma forse é colpa dell'anzianità del film.
