One good plot twist, pretty intense movie, and Sharon Stone is a joy to the eye.
Notable for the fact that it's campy as anything. Sharon Stone hams it up as Isabelle Adjani desperately attempts to give it some legitimacy.
acting was terrible....the story had twists and turns, but ending too predictable.........

I was upset by the fact that this film was so bad, I mean even with Stone included. At this point in her career she still had the power of her academy nomination and with the inclusion of both Kathy Bates and Isabelle Adjani who had been nominated for two Oscars you would have expected more. Avoid it, it's just a big boring mess.

This one added some Hollywood factors, which made the movie look cheap compared to the 1955 version. There were nudity, violence and love scenes, which the old one did not have. They added some touch of modernity and Hollywood, but what's the point? Anyway, what was disappointing was that the new one ruined the suspense of the original story. I am pretty sure it has nothing to do with the fact that I have seen it before. The new version somehow added more details to the film yet it made it seem emptier. It didn't keep you guessing. The look on Sharon Stone's face made you realize what was going on. So not very interesting to watch.
Sharon Stone sticks out like a sore thumb and Adjani is a simpering mess. The only character that's worthwhile in this dreary movie is Kathy Bates who gets the best ending 'punch'-line.
I made sure not see the original film before looking at this movie, because I wanted to see the movie on it's own merit. Sharon Stone is at her icy best and Isabelle Adjani is fantastic as the weak hearted wife. Kathy Bates does quite well as the detective, a role which was originally written for a man in the original film. Diabolique is pretty decent until it's overblown (I'm putting it mildly) finale, where the creators try to extend the final 10 minutes into a silly and cartoonish cat and mouse freak show. It's not so much that it's bad, it just belongs in a different movie, preferably one of the same period staring Neve Campbell and Denise Richards.
For those who haven't seen the original, Diabolique might entertain you, otherwise, just skip it. It's certain to become a staple of midnight cable T.V.

If you do feel compelled to watch this film, do yourself a favour and check out the original film as well; you won't be disappointed.

It has a good, if traditional, score, and a real suspensful mood. But, like the original, it drags and drags. Elements are thrown into the film aren't really necesarry (i.e. the lesbian elements that were only implied in the orginal are brought out here). It's even given a different third act, giving the movie a more Hollywood feel. Also, this is one of those "homage" remakes that follow so much of the orginal, you almost wondred why you didn't just watch the orginal again. The sets, the props, the timing of plot points, and even Sharon Stone's performance are just copies from the original.
eh, it was alright. i'd like to see the french version, to see if its as good as everyone says. was pretty predictable, and not very much of a thriller.
