Joseph Fiennes does better in period pieces instead of modern. He seems to lose something when he does those roles. Gwyneth Paltrow is lovely in the movie and also in the play. I enjoyed the entire cast and this is one of the few movies where Colin Firth is not adorable at all, which is perfect since his character blows. Overall, love the movie and I think I love watching the play within the movie more. Judi Dench was great as Queen Elizabeth. It's nice that it brought in some of the rumors that Shakespeare didn't write a lot of his plays. They did it well with instead people offering suggestions and he writing. It's a nice balance. Overall, a good movie.
Such an amazingly overrated movie, worth it just to savor the mediocrity that the academy gobbles up with a grin.
Except for his ink stained nails, the character of Shakespeare is sickening. I am sure he is spinning in his grave. Badly made movie with absolutely nothing to look back to. LOVE this movie -- not just the beauty of it, not just the poetry, but the truly marvelous screen play with all its "inside jokes" for Shakespeare buffs. Sure, it's fiction, but WHAT FICTION!

Joe Fiennes was robbed of an Oscar, not to mention the nomination! He *is* Will Shakespeare! Gwyneth Paltrow won the Best Actress for her Viola de Lessups. Geoffrey Rush got the Best Supporting Actor that year: not for this role (a role that shows his mastery as an effortless performer), but for his just-as-excellent role in "Elizabeth". Ben Affleck - at this point in his career, he was a bit over-rated and over-used; but he's an excellent supporting player. Colin Firth is easily overlooked as the comic relief, but if you pay attention, you'll see why he's been one of my favorite actors since "Valmont".
What more can I say? It's a beautiful, romantic world of poetry and love... beset by true love and true loss... For me, this movie is timeless and one of my all-time favorites. I never tire of watching it!

An all time romantic favorite of mine. One I'll watch whenever it's on.
Oh, Cate Blanchett's Oscar had been robbed.
Well, except this, it is indeed a beautiful movie with a famous cast.
