Soon, gossip buzzes about Stella's liaison with recently wed American financier Robert Windermere (Mark Umbers) -- whose emotionally fragile wife (Scarlett Johansson) then falls prey to a notorious bounder. This nuanced tale of morals and manners is based on an Oscar Wilde play.

So many quotable quotes! Funny & I'm a Helen Hunt fan - so a good watch. Some of the plot twists were predictable but otherwise good evening entertainment.
I usually love Helen Hunt but wasn't taken in by this movie or its pace. I also hadn't realised this was based on the Oscar Wilde play until the end.
I really enjoyed this movie based on the play by the wonderful Oscar Wilde, called "Lady Windermere's fan." You have to love the witty dialogue, the comedy of errors and the happy endings...
A solid but not exactly inspiring film. A pity, since the source material is well-written.
i really liked this. helen hunt was good (surprise), scarlett beautiful (she doesn't have to do anything else) ... yes, most of the criticism below is spot on, but it still works.
there were lots of cute funny parts to this movie. i really liked H.H.'s character and grew to dislike the main characters husband.

In 1930, Mrs. Erlynne, who describes herself as poor and infamous, driven from New York society by jealous wives, sees a news photo of wealthy Lord Windermere and his young wife: she heads for the Amalfi Coast to be among the rich and famous for 'the season' and to snare Mr. Windermere. Gossips twitter as he spends his afternoons with her, his wife blissfully innocent as she blushingly fends off attentions from a young English nobleman, an international playboy who thinks he's in love. Mrs. Erlynne is also pursued by a worldly-wise older English nobleman. Mrs. Windermere's 20th birthday party approaches, where all plays out amid numerous amoral Wildean mutterings. This film has a good and witty screenplay, high production values, wonderful scenery, excellent actors, beautifully made costumes and a score that enhances every bit of enjoyment in the film. I dont know why so many give this bad reviews. its not a 5 star movie but easily 3 stars. I especially like period pieces about this part of the early 19th century. I'm afraid I'm going to disagree once again with all the critics' groups which have failed this picture, but if you ask me I'd like to say this movie is astonishing, all the performances are terrific (specially Hunt and Wilkinson, what a great couple they are), Johansson is young but very talented, the locations are fantastic: they're a visual delight, the houses are very elegant and I'd really like to live in one of those. The adaptation to Wilde's play is very well done, overall the film's entertaining, it made me laugh, it captures the scent of the original but also depicts what would have happened if Wilde had written the play in the 1930's.
I liked it. For the longest time I thought an affair was actually going on but it turned out to be something completely different. Helen Hunt looked amazing in this movie!!!

All the intelligent and sharply witty dialogues are over shadowed by too much "happenings" and "cuts". I did not mind the "Americanizing" of the play, but neither Helen nor Scarlett impressed me. Amalfi, Italy, is a beautiful place to film though and I loved the flowery 20's dresses and hats!

Helen Hunt was very good as the woman with questionable morals and a suitcase full of secrets. She portrays the character in such a way that you actually find yourself routing for her by the movie's end. Scarlett Johansson is well cast as a wife who's husband falls under Helen Hunt's spell. Or does he??
Critic Reviews
A Good Woman suffers from a staggeringly bad miscasting of its central role and from a cut-and-paste screenplay that substitutes random insertions of Wilde epigrams for character.full review
Something is wrong with A Good Woman: The lightning never strikes. It's never quite alive.full review
A Good Woman above all lacks the joyful, lucid anger that lights up Wilde's plays -- the sense that beneath the witticisms he's telling it like it is to people who aren't used to hearing it.full review
Wilde provides the quips, Helen Hunt the acting chops, Scarlett Johansson the ample bosom, and all of it is filtered through golden mediterranean light.full review
The source material and supporting actors make A Good Woman a fairly good movie. But the performances by Helen Hunt as an aging seductress and Scarlett Johansson as a young bride are closer to mediocre.full review
Except for the expert Tom Wilkinson as Tuppy, a wealthy swain of Stella's, the acting ranges from amateurish to atrocious.full review
