As a boy, even though from a strict Pentecostal family, he felt God told him through a sign to leave his father and his faith and join the Church of England. Lucinda (Cate Blanchett) is a teenage Australian heiress who has an almost desperate desire to liberate women from the confines of the male-dominated culture of the Australia of that time. She buys a glass factory and has a dream of building a church made almost entirely of glass, and then transporting it to the Australian Outback. Oscar and Lucinda meet on a ship going to Australia. Once there, they are for different reasons ostracized from society, and as a result "join forces" together, which leads to the events that will change both their lives forever.

I love most of the roles Ralph Fiennes tends to pick. They're each very different from one another. Here he plays an eccentric bright red-headed priest, Oscar, who adopts a gambling problem. What starts out as a means to an end. Winning bets, keeping only the amount he needs and donating the rest to the poor; turns into an addiction. Despite Oscar's phobia for the ocean, he meets Lucinda (played by Cate Blanchett) on a ship; who is equally obsessed with gambling. They become good friends and eventually a final wager is made as to whether or not Oscar would be able to transport and put together a glass church for one of Lucinda's friends, who is also a priest working in a location that doesn't have a proper church.

Cate Blanchett has her first real starring role here next to the brilliant Ralph Feinnes. This whimsical, romantic, gambling, religious, Australian period piece is truly enchanting. I dare you not to like these two characters.

(p.s. the score is haunting and stands well on its own - I've been listening to it for many years now...)
Meandering and bizarre, but well acted. An odd concept overall, I'm sure the book has to be better and more defined. Certainly it will have less blank stares than the film (mostly on the part of Fiennes).
Cate Blanchett and Ralph Fiennes make this movie really special. Don't know why the info said he was from a Pentecostal family - quite clear it was Plymouth Brethren!!
I loved this movie. It is not the ordinary love story but beautifully done. The ending caught me off guard.
One of my all time favourite movies. A young Cate Blanchett stars in a perfectly acted role opposite a delightful Ralph Fiennes. A stunning and quirky Australian movie.
