After his father refuses to help him out, Lawrence escapes his angry debtors by jumping on a Peace Corp flight to Southeast Asia, where is assigned to build a bridge for the local villagers with American-As-Apple-Pie WSU Grad Tom Tuttle and the beautiful and down-to earth Beth Wexler. What they don't realize is that the bridge is coveted by the U.S. Army, a local Communist force, and a powerful drug lord. Together with the help of At Toon, the only English speaking native, they must fight off the three opposing forces and find out what is right for the villagers, as well as themselves.

Brother says I should see this and mom says this was one of my dad's favorite movies. so... why not? I oughta see it.
Despite the super talent of Hanks and Candy, this movie is a bit flat. There aren't a whole lot of laughs in it.
Love it! Very funny, funny storyline, great comedic cast, one of my favorites.

Tom Hanks, the star of this crap, has said that there are some movies he wishes he could remove from his resume. Volunteers should be one of them, but might not be since he met his long-time wife Rita Wilson through it - love shows up at the kookiest times, huh? John Candy is hands down the most irritating part with his lousy Tom Tuttle character, and it's quite embarrassing to see our precious Hanks act a fool and throw away lines in a lame "rich Harvard boy" dialect. If you really want to see Hanks and Candy paired up in a much better film, see Splash. If you see Volunteers on the rental shelf, do me a favor: knock the display case to the ground and "splash" a loogie on it. Anyone with a brain shouldn't care.
This one doesn't quite live up to Bachelor Party, at least as far as Tom Hanks's performance goes, but he has a much better supporting cast with the late, great John Candy, his future wife Rita Wilson, and Tim Thomerson as the creepy CIA guy.
"Bridge on the River Kwai" and "Casablanca" thrown in a blender, topped with '80s hubris. But -- you know -- NOT good.
A silly waste of time. It's one of those movies that they always conveniently skip over when they show a Hanks retrospective. There's a good reason why.
