I like period pieces and Stephen Fry is no slouch in this genre. Bright Young Things is an affectionate, albeit superficial, homage to pre-WW2 Britain. And that's just how Fry wants it.
LOVE this movie. I wasn't so fond of the more serious bits near the end, but overall it's worth watching over and over.
From my first encounter with Stephen Fry once the 1990 "Jeeves and Wooster" came to PBS I've enjoyed him. Then Hugh Laurie showed up on one of the few TV shows we've liked that has lasted.

BYT is Fry's first directing effort. It is funny, sad and romantic, if the sale of a friend can be romantic. The cast is great, with the older generation played by stars one knows, including O'Toole trying out for his role in "Venus." The young things were apparently less known, but are excellent (Emily Mortinmer, Stephen Campbell Moore, James McAvoy, Michale Sheen and Fenella Woolgar.)
wow.... perfect..i dont think this was the intended outcome but i would love to go back to the twenties... it all seems divine darling
As a film per se, rather diffuse. But ah, desperate gaiety! And I shall have to repress the urge to adopt a Bright Young People accent; too, too shy-making.
Gimme more, gimme more! Can't have enough of that charm, wit and ironic sense of humor. British lit almost at it's best on the big screen.
Visually appealling and a pertfectly good film. The plot did however suffer from the truncation of film adaptation and many of the characters deserved a more in depth exploration.
Entertaining throughout and some very witty lines. Great costume. Could have been a 4-star if not for the early exit of McAvoy!

Sizzles with Jazz Age energy, sparkles with champagne wit and roars along like a Grand Prix race car.full review
Busy, unfocused, yet still acridly funny and moving.full review
Fry, in his directing debut, shows an eye for style, a fine literary intelligence and an unmistakable heart.full review
Waugh's novel and Fry's movie wisely see that their characters live by spending their comic capital and ending up emotionally overdrawn.full review
You walk away from Bright Young Things believing that, by and large, Fry has gotten Waugh as well as any filmmaker could be expected to.full review
This is just how I'd always imagined one of my favorite comic novels should look and sound.full review
Stephen Fry's adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies honors its source with vigor and gusto, capturing both Waugh's cheeky humor and his dark, stringent moralism.full review
By the time Fry lets darkness encroach on these bright young things, including a flapper and a suicidal scribe, the fizz is gone.full review
