This took FOREVER to get going. I enjoyed the last half an hour of the movie, but I was pretty bored for the most part.

This really isn't my genre, but the scares are quickly replaced with thrills, and then actually tells a decent story. Though the plot wasn't highly complicated, it had enough twists, turns, and creepy moments to keep me happy, and it was all well written and acted. Bacon of course is in good form, and that little kid does a great job. This is a well balanced horror movie.
I saw this when it first came out 10 years ago and just watched it again. It really holds of well, excellent acting and a strong mystery component while also being pretty scary.
Liked it a lot. The ghost didn't upstage the character's dealings with being haunted. Great book by Richard Matheson too.

We all know how much of a hit that was, and that hit steamrolled right over Stir of Echoes. In my opinion, Stir is a much better film. The same happened in 1987 with my favorite vampire film Near Dark opening two weeks after the other vampire film that summer Lost Boys (which is a favorite too, don't get me wrong).
Being a horror film, the first question into anyone's mind is the scare factor. It has it. Including a few hated "jump scares", Koepp does weave tension and intensity into the plot and Kevin Bacon's performance drives it home.
It is a shame Koepp only a has a handful of other directorial credits to his name (the last being the boring Ghost Town). He definatly knows what he is doing. He adapted the script from Richard Matheson's novel (I have not read it but Matheson is a favorite). The film's working class characters ground it relatability and I'm glad to say the supernatural doesn't go over the top too much; an issue I have with many of these types of films.
Great casting job on this one. The one film Kevin Bacon has been in that i can watch multiple times. Film is pretty brutal at some parts. The one film Kevin Bacon has been in that i can watch multiple times. Film is pretty brutal at some parts. The heart of the story is a family trying to stay to geather through a rough time and pull through. It doesnt weaken the story to much for me adds a little bit more depth to the overall story. The kid that plays the son is a great casting job. hes already a little bit scary and now he can talk to ghosts..the fingernail scraping off going down the stairs is the clincher for me..errr that was rough! good watch great for the season.
