The camera truly loves the planes of her face; even dusty and bedraggled, she radiates star power--which is good, because The Missing needs it. When her daughter is kidnapped by renegade Indians, Maggie Gilkeson (Blanchett) is forced to turn to her estranged father (Tommy Lee Jones, Men in Black, The Fugitive), a man who abandoned her as a child to join an Indian tribe. Together, they pursue a malignant brujo (or witch), who sells young girls in Mexico. The Missing features solid supporting performances from Evan Rachel Wood, Eric Schweig, Aaron Eckhart, Val Kilmer, and feisty young Jenna Boyd as Maggie's youngest daughter Dot, who refuses to be left behind. Despite the cast and some gorgeous cinematography, though, The Missing never finds its stride. --Bret Fetzer

rated "TheMissing(2003)" starring EvanRachelWood*wink* 3of5stars ..after borrowing it like 20x from the library and always not watching it in time when it was due
This movie was great. It's set in the old West and is a great time piece. The story moves and is suspenseful without being predictable. Great acting, especially from Jenna Boyd.
Old repeated type story, but well done by Ron Howard, Tommy Lee Jones and Cate Blanchett. A bit longer movie.. but perhaps it's trade mark of Ron Howard.
great performing from cate i ove it sooo much and tommy 2 ....... good story
Good for what it is but I'm never a fan of movies set in older times...It was a good story and had its tense moments...good cast helped it.
Ok so has Ron Howard ever really made a bad movie? This is an awesome movie, it will grab your attention whether or not you even like westerns. The acting was incredible from the youngest to the oldest.
I can see why people didn't pick up on this. It's slow and far fetched, but the scenery and acting are fantastic. Doesn't feel as formulaic as a typical Ron Howard film. Not as rewatchable as I'd hope, but there are definitely some breathtaking scene... (read more) I can see why people didn't pick up on this. To be honest, even though I cannot say that I enjoyed this film a great deal, there is nothing about this film that actually made me dislike it! A strange emotion, but I'll try to explain it!

First of all, I will say that- in my opinion- this is actually a very well-done film. It's got a well-written and interesting plot, lots of action and suspense, drama, and REALLY great acting from the entire cast!
Now, on the other hand... it is quite violent and dark. There are a lot of images in this film which are extremely disturbing and upsetting. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who doesn't have a hard head and a strong stomach!
All that being said, I find myself stuck inbetween liking this film and disliking it. I just think that it really is such an interesting story, and there is such great acting from all of the cast. Perhaps if it were carried out in a less dark and violent way, I could have fully embraced this movie.
In the end, I think I would have to say: if you've got the disposition for a film like this, I would recommend it.
It was cool that the Apache language was used in the film. And I was relieved that Jenna Boyd was cast, instead of this being yet another Dakota Fanning movie.
Slow and boring. This is what happens when you get a director who "doesn't want to associate with a certain genre" Should be re-titled "Kill All The Indians"
Lets face it... Western is dead and Tommy just aint a real Indian. This entire thing is just too long and lacks suspense and significance. Some rescue plans are just weird and hectic... Overall: slightly above average.
Critic Reviews
Even Cate Blanchett can't save this misbegotten horse opera.full review
Despite the actors' hard work (particularly Blanchett), the whole experience ultimately has a careful blandness to it, and the family-unity theme is hit with the subtlety of a hundred hammers.full review
A routine thriller, with Western frills and fringes.full review
A movie that is, by turns, needlessly unpleasant for cheap effect and misguidedly heart-warming when it should remain stringent. The Missing lives down to its title.full review
It's such a preposterous setup that I was always aware of the plot chugging away, and the logistics of the chase defy all common sense.full review
The Missing is well made, suspenseful, and superlatively acted for the most part, but its harshness never feels organic to the tale. What should be devastating is just terribly unpleasant.full review
A taut, intriguing, expertly crafted tale reminiscent of John Ford's classic The Searchers.full review
