But director Carl Franklin also tries to inject a police-mystery angle that it neither needs nor will support. Renee Zellweger plays a young writer on the rise, who has finally gotten her break for a New York magazine. While home for a birthday party for her nearly famous writer father (William Hurt), she learns that her mother (Meryl Streep) has been diagnosed with cancer. Then her father does the unthinkable: He all but commands her to put her career on hold to take care of her mother and nurse her through her illness. Dad, a popular college professor who has never gotten the literary acclaim he always believed he deserved, essentially checks out--and daughter must play parent to her mother. Strong performances by Streep and Zellweger give this parent-child relationship the heart--and the anger--of the real thing, while Hurt seems slightly disembodied as the self-involved father whose needs have dominated both women. Still, the detective-story aspect (the film is told in flashback, as the cops try to discover whether someone slipped Mom a fatal dose of morphine) is a construct that could have been done without. --Marshall Fine

Excellent family drama. Superb performances and direction. Meryl is great as always, but this is Rene's best performance!
Makes you wonder how much you could put up with if you were in the same situation. Very touching, emotional and leaves you hoping that you have 'one true thing' in your own life.
touching...a very realistic view on the illness of a parent and how one can become so cold and hesitant to put his/her life on hold to care for the needs of their loved ones - parents.

George "You have a Harvard education but where is your heart?"
Kate "It's so much easier to be happy. It's so much easier to choose to love the things that you have, instead of always yearning for what you're missing, or what it is that you're imagining you're missing. It is so much more peaceful."
haven't seen it since it came out in theaters. however, i still remember how emotionally intense it was. not exactly a "feel good" movie.
So sad, So good, So touching. I love the character of Kate Gulden and Streep plays her phenomenally. William Hurt does a perfect job of making the audience hate his character (in a good way).
I was surprised I liked this so much. It is a great story about a mother-daughter relationship. Meryl is great as always :)
Great movie! It reminds you what is truly important in life! Everyone should watch it once in a while...
i don't think renee zellweger was that great in this. It was a nice story but a little predictable and boring maybe i will watch it again someday in a better frame of mind.
Sentimental Oscar engineered drama. While the story is edging towards being hard-hitting it never really gets there, due in part to not very genuine performances. This type of story has been done so much better out of Hollywood's hands.
