Unique premise and well executed. Manages to mix the animation scenes in perfectly without upsetting the overall mood of the film. Great performance from Emile Hirsch,Jena Malone and Kieran Culkin.

It is an interesting fusion of short comic book animation sequences with live action film, and it works very well with the stylistic inclinations of the film. Peter Care does wonderful work behind the camera, and in the process, gets some tremendous performances from his young stars, particularly Emile Hirsch, Kieran Culkin and Jena Malone. Jodie Foster is dynamite as the head nun, whom the naive and immature group of adolescent boys villify as representing evil, when she really isn't. This is a movie about growing up the hard way, and in the process learning lessons about death, acceptance and love. Emile Hirsch shows all the traits of a future Academy Award-winning actor, and it's great to watch him in his element. This film comes highly recommended.
Though it is predictable in its use of coming-of-age cliches, this film is still incredibly powerful and funny. The comic book scenes are genius. Genius.

Funny, sad, bittersweet and dark, "The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys" is a terrific film all around. Emile Hirsch is quite good here, but the real star of the picture is Kieren Culkin, who single-handedly manages to prove himself a more adept actor in this one role than his brother Macaulay did in his entire career.
'Altar Boys' excells past its standard coming-of-age story by offering shades of grey and a terrific cast, and it also manages to survive some ridiculous animated sequences.
At first the cartoon sequences were really cool, but they were far longer than they were interesting. Kieran Culkin and Emile Hirsch are great, though.

I kind of wanted to see more character development, though. The mix of live-acting and comic animation was interesting. It's unfortunate that not much gets resolved in the end, in terms of character relationships and stuff. It's still worth seeing, at least once, I think -- for the plot and to see its potential, I guess.

Excellent cast, the Culkin kid genuinely surprised me with a solid performance and Hirsch is always fantastic. I wonder if the Nun/pegleg character was slightly miscast - although it may have been my preconceived impression of Foster that really took the edge off her performance.
