Local hairdresser Phil was once the golden boy of the competition until his wife and model Shelly left him and their son Brian to set up shop with her lover Sandra. Retired from the scene, Phil wants nothing to do with all the excitement surrounding the beautiful and stylish crowd that has flocked to the town. However, as the preparations for the big event begin to unfold, it becomes clear that the out-of-towners aren't playing by the rules, so rivals Phil, Shelly and Sandra must put aside their differences and team up to put their town back on the map and their family back on track.

Hartnett struggles with the British accent and Rachael Leigh Cook simply rides out a brief wave of leading-lady status. Natasha Richardson and Alan Rickman, on the other hand, both move effortlessly through their own touching story. And the hair is lots of fun.
I love it so much that I can't stop watching it. Alan Rickman and Bill Nighy have some of the best lines in the movie.

This story would have been so much better told as a low budget / unknown cast film, allowing more emphasis on the West Yorkshire setting, rather than giving it a star laden Richard Curtis style 'we're all cute characters' treatment. A story about competition hairdressing was never going to be another 'Kes' but then it hardly makes the 'Love, Actually' grade either.
Aussie Rachel Griffiths stands out in that her accent is very well done. At the other end of the scale, Josh Hartnett sounds Irish at times and should either spend a lot more time with the voice coach or stick to US roles.
I continue to despair at the English language film industry's ability to waste effort and money on unworthwile projects, surely someone thinks why are we doing this? (or do they just take the money and run).
Bill Nighy, Alan Rickman and Josh Hartnett attempting a Yorkshire accent. Plus competitive hairdressing. All rather unexpected, but fun.
richardson was great and its sad she is no longer with us, griffes could have been in it more and what was josh hartnetts accent?? at least cook stuck to american. Good film though reminded me of kinky boots
What a sweet and funny story! I think "the Mayor" was the funniest part. The hairstyles were crazy!
Low key story about broken families, cheaters and the thrilling world of professional hair styling. Enjoyable with some great chuckles along the way (technocolour sheep?).
