Directors Cut: 5/5 Stars
The theatrical cut id only give 3 stars. why only 3?... Despite its 2 hr 25 minute runtime, the movie is rushed which makes the characters hollow, the battles sometimes disappointing (i say sometimes cuz every battle scene is stunning). The actors did a great job, all of them. Ridley Scott did a great job. everyone did a great job at making this an entertaining movie. However, this theatrical release is an extended highlight reel. If you really want to witness the beauty and majesty that this film has to offer, watch the directors cut.
I would give the directors cut 6/5 stars. It is approximately an hour longer (i know, thats 3 and a half hours. long but its worth every second). Basically what the directors cut does is take the flashy exciting battle sequences, which remain largely unchanged minus a few more squirts of sand-soaked blood, and surround them with a deep, thoughtful, meaningful, quality story and characters. You feel for Balian more and more. You come to hate the crusaders seeking power and wealth. Balian is now the hero he was supposed to be in the theatrical release. You understand his trials and tribulations to become the "perfect knight." You choose to be on his side when he crusades for a just cause because you actually care for the man. In this directors cut, the deepest levels of meaning are exposed. It becomes as much a movie about faith, real and honest, as it is a movie of historical fiction.
To be entertained, the theatrical release will do but i fear you will be left thinking that the film did not live up to its potential. The directors cut will solve that. The directors cut shatters potential and is honestly one of the best films i have ever seen.
one star for orlando who had learned some new facial expressions. otherwise quite horrible
Of course Hollywood can't get anything right but it was good and I liked it. Love the battle scenes
Ridley Scott made this one way too long!! I was expecting another Gladiator but this does not cut it. The setting and cinematography is top notch however, as is the costume and props but just wasted i think.
If this is such a great movie, why did I almost completely forget watching it the first time, when the second viewing only took place about 3 years later? Perhaps because it's sooo long (director's cut) and I fell asleep or something.
Let's hear it for Orlando Bloom! I absolutely loved this movie. I'm not sure where the authors came up with the idea for the movie though. It has many religious themes which I found uncomfortable at times. The extended version was more than 3 hours ... (read more) Let's hear it for Orlando Bloom! I absolutely loved this movie. I felt the first half was rather slow but as the movie progressed it drew me in. Facinating to watch!

Scott should have gone for a better actor. Still, it does have some wonderfully shot sequences and a terrific score by Harry Gregson Williams.
Wow! What a long film! Thankfully Film4 has advert breaks! This is a film well worth seeing. I liked the cinema version, but the longer Director's cut is so much better. Indeed, once you've seen the longer version you get the impression that the original edit was done by someone from a rival studio trying to mess it up!
Kingdon of Heaven exhales a more than passionate story, one we'd expect from Ridley Scott, and one we should enjoy full heartedly.

Since we barely know what's at stake -- we're too confused and bored to care -- all this fighting means nothing to us, and yet Scott still hopes to rev us up with it.full review
An epic about Christian crusaders who happen to be liberal humanists willing to die for the sake of religious tolerance. That's just ... weird.full review
The movie is distinguished by the uniform excellence of its actors ... Orlando Bloom, in particular ... gives a performance of striking stillness and reserve ...full review
No one should be offended except, of course, those who like movies that excite the mind as well as the pulse.full review
A spectacular battle for Jerusalem, as only Ridley Scott could direct.full review
William Monahan's deft script underscores the modern parallels in this story without hitting us upside the head.full review
One imagined that a movie about the Crusades would be gallant and mad; one feared that it might stoke some antiquated prejudice. But who could have dreamed that it would produce this rambling, hollow show about a boy?full review
