90s classic and great performances from cuba gooding, ice cube & laurence fishburne. extremley powerful and moving. a must-see!
I don't think it's an incredible heart-breaking drama that some people try to make it out to be, but it's still a good movie.
John Singleton has outdone himself with this gangsta-themed classic. The acting is superb from all of the actors.

The plot:
When Tre (Cuba Gooding Jr.) is expelled from his school, his mum makes him move to his dad, in Crenshaw. As soon as Tre get's to his Dad's house, he is forced to sweep the leaves, and that's when you know this is not gonna be a walk in the park for Tre. from that point on, Tre's friends, Doughboy (Ice Cube) & Ricky (Morris Chestnut), helps Tre out when he needs it, and Tre helps them back in return. But when bad things begin to happen, Tre doesn't know what to do. Join his gang and help or stay home and do nothing.
What I think:
This film is very sad. Lots of tragedies, lots of emotional moments, lots of violence & lots of bad/foul language. Nevertheless this is a classic film, by far, this is John Singleton's best film. Ice Cube does an amazing job at his first shot at acting, this is also one of Larry Fishburne's best roles, and this is the best Cuba Gooding Jr. film he's ever done.
Overall:
5/5 A classic hood-film, which will always be one of my favourite films.
Necessary viewing. The movie manages to simultaneously entertain, enlighten, and excel in the many facets of production--a rare feat in movie-making at any point in history.
An excellent debut from John Singleton (who was only 23 when this was released). Laurence Fishburne & Cuba Gooding, Jr. offer sterling lead performances and Ice Cube, Morris Chestnut & Angela Bassett are great in support.

It's unfortunate that Boyz spawned a galaxy of parodies, wannabes and rip-offs, as it's entertaining, informative and ultimately, disheartening of it's portrayal of life in LA ghettos.
Menace II Society is also worth watching, as well as Spike Lee's Jungle Fever. Anything else should be ignored.
I just re-watched it for my Cultural Diversity and Media class. Its a really well put together flick... 'Mamma?! Why you hit me for?!'
Critic Reviews
Boyz N the Hood has maturity and emotional depth: There are no cheap shots, nothing is thrown in for effect, realism is placed ahead of easy dramatic payoffs, and the audience grows deeply involved.full review
