This is a movie very much of it’s time period. it’s a message movie, it’s themes are universal even with some fascism thrown in. This is a movie where by some stroke of luck everything came together all the ingredients combined to make the best package. Casting, direction, soundtrack, writing. It is certainly the best movie allan moyle had ever made (I have a hunch it will be the best he is ever going to make though he tried years later with empire records which some liked and even has a cult following)

Christian slater was never better Then in this movie. Samantha Mathis making her debut in this film. What the hell happened to her. She was excellent, sexy, trashy, intelligent, dangerous, rebellious, funny the ultimate artsy/punk rock fantasy girl.

Describing the plot it sounds like the teenage wolfman jack story, a shy student starts a underground radio show. That strikes a chord with teenagers about the alienation they feel and the unfir practices at the local high school as the adults, School faculty and the FCC not only try to find out his identity but also shut him down. But that is only the basics. This film is so much more. Like a rebel punk john Hughes story with an ambiguous but positive ending.

It’s a good movie that i heavily identified with when i was in high School i still partially do.


They certainly don’t make them like these anymore. Even though it tries to be a message movie. My Favorite part is when those close to him find out that it is him who is the mysterious DJ the look on there faces says it all. It’s the kind of look I’ve been hunting for my whole life when it comes to myself and my art. Awe, Shock, surprise, proudness, and amazement.

One of the most under-appreciated movies of all time. I wish Christian Slater would have kept doing films this good. A great soundtrack too.

I saw part of this and it was just so outre and self-conscious that I didn't bother to sit through the whole thing.

10 years since I had last seen this movie. And it just doesn't get old at all when you remember High school! Christian Slater is really turning it on, damn it does feel good! ;)

Lame teen movie from the 90's - funny though how much has changed - the whole premise of this movie is that everyone should have a voice and now with the internet - blogs, youtube, etc - everyone does!

The early 90's were such a great time for social dissidence (or deviance, in this case).

But, as I watched this movie again recently I was reminded why it's one of my all-time favorites.
The themes of oppressed youth taking on "the man" and the rampant use of vulgarity as a form of protest make me smile.
There are lots of movies about the freedom of speech but this one stands out.
What's great about this little "teen" movie is it takes itself just seriously enough to make it believable but skates just under laughable.
Another great thing about this movie is how well it holds up.
The major plot point of the film comes into play when the high school principal states that her success can be measured by SAT scores and that she got those scores by keeping the "trouble makers" out.
This is something that any high school student could relate to. Everyone has had that same speech crammed down their throat at some point or another and this film shows what could potentially happen if things are taken too far.
And another thing; who doesn't like remembering a time when Christian Slater was still cool?
I'm going to sound like an old person now but it's the truth.
Teen/coming-of-age films today lack any real substance. They don't have any real emotion in them at all.
This one is a real winner. If you haven't checked it out before I strongly encourage you to give it a legitimate chance. Maybe you'll see what I did.

(read more) its not often a movie speaks too you directly on a intimate and personal levle. pump up th volume did. it pulls forward the important points of being an adolecent, cuts out most of the cheezy bullshit and gose straight for the bare knuckled truth. thats the films greatst assest. it is compleatly honest! christian slater is the cool'st nerdy guy ever! the soundtrack is powerfull and fitting the agnst feel of the film. a minamilsitic direction style combined with vibrent lighting, gives it a unique look. though as iv mentiond, its the unsual concept of a prirate radio station and its brillint writting that sets it above the rest. it came out in 1990, which makes "Pump up the volume" a real dimond in rough. i urge everyone of you who has ever felt sorry for them self, lonley,lost,confused or just plain stressed with the genaration in which you live in and the stage of your life that your curently in. too watch the outstanding peice of original cinema.

For a movie that's so dated now, well... hell!! It's still a lot of fun! Think, "Rebel without a Cause" for the 90's. Easily one of the best Christian Slater flicks.
