Beautiful locations, Good Action sequences, Great dance sequences - and Shahrukh Kahn!
Kareena Kapoor-flaunting historically-minded musical epic, with one eye on the Gladiator audience and another on 1980s-style advertising imagery. Vigorous and colourful.

You need to have seen tons of Hindi films to appreciate why this could possibly be important to anyone. It has one redeeming factor, which is of course Santosh Sivan's awesome photography. And it has a genuine sense of adventure and viciousness. The film is hampered by the overly commercial sensibilities of its producer (who is also the lead actor). If one could give Sivan an unlimited budget and zero artistic limitations, he could probably make a solid & uncompromising piece of film. Alas, commercial Indian cinema is light years behind the rest of the world in every possible way. A very young 20-year-old Kareena Kapoor is *jaw-hanging-open* dazzling to look at.
I bopped around to the hit tune Aa Tayar Hoja from this flick since 2003, but the film was disappointing. Endorsed by the Dalai Lama, this film is a portrait of a Buddhist hero with a troubled past, smashed together with a tragic romance.

I had hoped this lively Bollywood film would put more of a focus on Asoka's transformation, and was a little disappointed that the story ended rather abruptly with the lead character's awakening to the tragic consequences of war. I suppose the film's producers decided that 5-10 minutes on post-conquest contributions to human (and even animal) welfare wouldn't be all that entertaining.
Ah... a great movie. Its like an Indian Braveheart.. with all the Bollywood dancing but it has a great story and is very stylish.
