I credit the Ice Storm as being one of the first "indie" flicks of my life. I also credit it for changing the way I look at films ever since.
Ang Lee created a dud with Brokeback Mountain but delivered a masterpiece with The Ice Storm.

A lot was going on emotionally, but the film was never overwhelming, convoluted, under or over developed. Each character was given their time and breathing room. The acting was amazing, mostly by the younger members of the cast (Wood, Ricci, Maguire, Byrd, even Katie Holmes). This is my fave Ang Lee film thus far (Crouching Tiger was my fave). His use of ice as a symbol throughout and how the title related was very smart/well done/subtle. All in all, it was just a really interesting and entertaining movie with fantastic emotion and just enough deft humor to offset overwhelming bleakness. Probably my fave film of one of my fave sub-genres (basically the hating on white suburbia sub genre). Others include American Beauty (which may be my fave if not this one), Little Children, Lymelife, Revolutionary Road, The Chumscrubber etc.

This weather made me think of this excellent Ang Lee film. If you didn't know there's no way you could tell this film was made in 1997 and not in 1973, when it takes place. Sad, but brilliantly told story.
When the frozen turkey bouces off the linoleum, Lee signals an America gone astray & involuted. Home is where the hurt is.
Good movie, about several families, and others durring/after an ice storm. It's about life, love, adultery, growing up, family, death and several other themes to. Rather dull if you're only into the loud explosion Michael Bay type movies.

If I have to sit through another American Beauty, I'm gonna crack. But this, thankfully, was NOT American Beauty. Bleak but well-done, and I thought it was handled very maturely by Ang Lee. I kind of thought the one character who dies towards the end (don't want to spoil it) was sort of unnecessary and felt contrived. But comparing the kind of harsh reality portrayed in a film like Ballast to this which is kind of a stark bunch of depressed middle-class white people bitching about their lives and emptiness or whatever, it just pales in comparison. But then again, it is Ang Lee, who does a great job with generic stories, so if that's your thing this is done quite well, but that's just not really my thing. There's nothing new or surprising about it. I did think that Sigourney Weaver was excellent in it though.
Critic Reviews
The best film about family so far this year. Just don't think Disney.full review
Despite its mordant undertones, the film is often satirical and frequently very funny, and quietly observant in its performances.full review
