At first Nicole is mesmerized by David, a polite, respectful--yet sexy--charmer she meets at a rave party, having slipped out for a wild night with her thrill-seeking best friend Margo. But then Nicole catches a glimpse of David's dark side, and her dream becomes a nightmare. When she tries to break free, her family is forced to draw together in order to confront David's determined, vicious attempts to take her back.

Every decade in the horror genre it goes through cycles of whats popular and what will drive in the masses. The fifties was known for it's sci fi cheapies, huge bugs, cheap alien get ups, etc. The sixties had the hammer films, gothic horror which led to the seventies of satanic thrillers and blockbuster epics (Jaws, Alien). The most notorious of these cycles were the lovable slasher craze that started in the 80ies, and by the early nineties the slasher craze died down, and paved way for the "person from hell" sub genre of thrillers. Whether it be the roommate from hell (Single White Female), the nanny from hell (The Hand that rocks the cradle), friend from hell (Poison Ivy) or the adolescent teen from hell (The Crush), the overall product is always the same. Before Scream started a whole new cycle, director James Foley helmed the "boyfriend from hell" a little late in the game, and of course by that point the "person from hell" had become just as redundant and familiar as the slashers were in the 80ies. Of course, everything in this movie is predictable and the concept been done to death, but if I can watch slashers which basically is the same thing over and over, I watch these thrillers in the same light, that despite knowing the overused concept, I still see what the director brings to the tale.
The movie starts off with some great aerial and tracking shot photography as we are introduced to The Walker family, the successful father who jogs at the crack of dawn, the faithful step mom who spends half the movie in the kitchen, the typical nerdy major league son, and the slut in the making teenage daughter, and even the good old family dog. All is well, excluding the typical family troubles such as the dad concerned for his daughters well being of not becoming some mega-slut and the step mom trying to be accepted and the step son calling the father "dad" in exchange for car rides to school. They live in a huge, vast house set in that topography along the Vancouver/Seattle border. Of course once the daughter starts seeing the mysterious Mark Whalberg, all the mundane upper class utopia goes to shit pretty quickly. You see, Marky Mark has some deep rooted issues, most likely from dropping his pants and trying to have a music career which failed so he enters the film industry causing trouble for Nicole (typically played by Reese Witherspoon). They are in love at first, then the signs of a psychopath begin to emerge, and before you know it, it's Fatal Attraction all over again.
The direction is quite competent, and the movie moves along at a fast pace. The acting is decent and the soundtrack was nice on the ears. Too bad the substance is micro-thin, and the chain of events just rolls along, not much originality or surprises. The movie gets some extra points for the last 20 minutes when Mark and his goons try and break into the high secured and locked up tight house with our family in peril. That reminded me of Assault on Precinct 13. The movie has some groan inducing moments, with the howler of scenes being Mark cutting his chest, and pouring ink over the wounds that spell out "Nicole 4 eva", I kid you not, signs of a highly disturbed individual. The movie also provides us with Alyssa Milano, following her footsteps from Poison Ivy 2, proving that she's all grown up and still capable of playing a slut (but what was the purpose of her character again?). The movie also fails in letting us invest in the love angle, no matter how many scenes we have of Reese and Mark making out while a female version of "Wild Horses" is playing, I just didn't buy that they were hopelessly in love. Some more meat to that angle would have made the movie stronger. We also get a wicked performance from William Peterson as the father. He was the only character that showed some depth. The step mom was able, but the script gave her nothing to work with, at least we know she can cook a wicked meal. Mark Whalberg was also quite good with what he had to do, too bad a lot of his antics were laughable.
Overall, you've seen this done before, better and even worse. This movie just does what it has to do, and that's about it.
Effective violent thrille rabout a young girl who dates Mr. Wrong. Good Mark Wahlberg performance.
This is one of my all time fav's, great cast William Petersen did a amasing job as the father. Very good soundtrak with the scenes highly recommend this one:)

Oh dear, I really don't know where to start with this awfully dull "thriller". I managed to sit through all of it but for a fairly short film it dragged on and on for what seemed like an eternity and the only thing that I was really fearful of was that I might fall asleep with the TV on and waste money on my parents' electricity bill.
With a thriller you are supposed to build up tension throughout the film and then release it all in a nail biting climax that leaves you gasping for breath and on the edge of your seat. It's a fairly simple idea, but Fear manages to botch it up royally.
You are introduced to a fairly tedious rich family, apparantly facing all sorts of problems, and then after about quater of an hour of mindless bitching the daughter meets supposedly the perfect boyfriend. As the guy says himself "if something seems too good to be true it probably isn't", meaning that he is obviously going to be a psycho. So much time is spent on them being "loving" together it doesn't really add anything to the plot except for making you want to throw up. One particular scene on a rollercoaster was particularly distasteful and quite disturbing for entirely the wrong reasons.
The premise isn't actually that bad, they probably could have squeezed a decent movie out of it if they had really tried but they decide to ignore subtley and hit you in the face with the obvious. They could have let the boyfriend slowly display his psychotic side, flashing the audience hints that the girl doesn't notice, so our fear for her grows the more and more the relationship goes on. The more she doesn't know he's fucking mental and the more we do, the more we care. Instead they decide that he is going to display his mentalness right infront of her face by going apeshit and attacking one of her buddys, all because the poor dude gave her a hug.
After this the plot just gets more ludicrous and keeps going round in circles but somehow manages to get to a really promising climax. Just when I thought the film might just be able to redeem itself, the director manages to mess up the ending as well. Brilliant.
There isn't really coherent message to the film and the acting from everybody is well below par. The entire film plays out as an endurance contest for how many cliches you can handle before you are forced to turn the TV off.
Was he still Marky Mark then? That guy from CSI looks exactly the same then as he does now. What the hell is wrong with me for liking this movie?
More of a dark comedy than anything else...but I will always enjoy this film for some strange reason lol

Anyways jumped on here and noticed I had the 5 star rating which still stands but no review, so lets rectify that shall we? Alot of my friends always ask me why of all people is Mark Wahlberg in my top 5 best actor list, well watch this flick ( cause this is the one that introduced me to Mr. Wahlberg ) and see for yourself he shines in this as the wayyyy over possesive boyfreind, showing both his caring lovable side and of course the rage in the cage side. Reese Witherspoon also in this does a solid job as well, little did I know watching this way back in the theatre when it was released, that she would become the actress that she is today. Actually all the cast were superb. A very good written thriller that gets you so pumped, you actually feel the anger that is flowing through Will Peterson's ( the dad) mind. My daughter is only 7 I have a few years left of her being only my lil girl before I ummm 'choke choke cough cough have to share her with yeah..... Anyhow over all a 5/5 for sure and now its on my shelf never to leave again!
