They stole his money, turned his woman against him, and left him for dead. Now tough-guy poster child Porter (the appropriately world-weary Mel Gibson) is back, bad to the bone, and a mite ticked off at the Organization that done him wrong. Mucho macho carnage ensues. It took some major guts for first-time director (and Oscar winner for the script of L.A. Confidential) Brian Helgeland to take a shot at adapting Donald Westlake's pseudonymous, legendarily gritty novel The Hunter for the screen (especially considering that director John Boorman and irresistible force Lee Marvin had already produced a fairly definitive rendering of the source material with their enigmatic 1967 masterpiece Point Blank). Nonetheless this novice auteur managed to pull out a winner. Put simply, this compulsively watchable piece of scuzz-art hits like a well-placed Magnum round, with a wonderful '70s vibe and an awesome rogues' gallery of baddies (including James Coburn, Kris Kristofferson, William Devane, and the riotously sadistic Lucy Liu) for the charmingly battered star to play off of--and ultimately wade through. Although this enjoyably seedy roll through the gutter of Crime Alley does occasionally threaten to wander off its downturned track (hands-on producer Gibson reportedly stepped in at the last moment to make his antihero a little more heroic), the final result is an admirably pulpy, distinctly dirty slice of neo-noir liberally marinated in blood, blue smoke, and bourbon. This particular payback's one tough little SOB, indeed. --Andrew Wright

Every body at some point in this movie wants a piece of Gibson's character Porter. So much violence and sleazeball characters you find yourself tide to this one just to see how they pull off a happy ending tout of this mess. This is a very dark brutal violent movie but that being said Brian Helgland still managed to make it fun and rollicking. Wonderful cast of supporting players all of whom are recognizable. This movie is fast furious and fun!Eminently watchable over and over and doesn't bore or tire even when you know what the ending will be!
This so far has been the last really good action movies Mel has been in and it's worth a watch!
Note* Lisa Ling's character of a cruel, dominatrix hooker is a real standout! Also Gregg Henry is an underrated jewel in that he has to be one of the most dependable player of sleazeball bad guys in movies today. Hes the guy we love to hate!
Mel Gibson killing everyone... ev.er.y.one. Mario Bello looking sexy as sexy is. No bullshitting around with the plot, straight to the fucking point. A true, comedic, dark, gritty, neo noir that knocked me the fuck down.

At one point I couldn't stop laughing in horrified hysteria due to all the brutal killings... it's in your face, fuck you in the balls, badass.
Ok, enough of that. There are some flaws that prevent it from being the greatest film ever made (Which i would name it as such if it weren't for these).
Shitty acting. David Paymer, Gregg Henry, and a handful of "minor" characters really... all kind of sucked. They were too comedic when compared to the ruthlessness of Gibson's Character.
At times the movie didn't seem to know if it wanted to be a drama or comedy, but by the end fixes itself and blends it well.
I watched the director's cut, because I guess the theatrical release blows cocks. So, when you go to watch this (not if, when, because you goddamn should), watch the director's. Else you're a pussy.
This film is about that everybody is so cool, that they never give anyone 70000 dollars. No way. Never. What were you thinking?
At least it is said hundreds of times that 70000 is just pocketmoney. But you will never get it. Never ever. Nono.

But Gibson is cool. And wants his money.
Looks really dumb, but Mel Gibson with a gun might be worth it.
Director's cut is worth seeing. Different feel from the other version, and more interesting. All the pieces tie together better.
One of Brian Helgeland's best scripts. I love the attitude this movie has. Really one of Mel Gibson's best performances.
Critic Reviews
It quickly slides into a Lethal Weapon without Danny Glover, complete with blowups and wisecracks, gratuitous torture scenes and Gibson in familiar form as the twinkling rascal who makes a virtue out of viciousness.full review
In the popcorn sense, it certainly delivers on mindless escapism. In the artistic sense, let's just say that Payback is a long way from Point Blank.full review
There is much cleverness and ingenuity in Payback.full review
