Rob Lowe stars as Dean Youngblood, an American rookie who's been given a shot on a Canadian Junior League hockey team. Sure, he can skate, but can he take a punch? This coming-of-age story is about learning the beauty of vicious hockey fights. No, really. Containing both young-bucks-in-the-locker-room shots and plenty of hockey violence, Youngblood is a surprisingly entertaining cupcake of a movie--there's not much nourishment, but it sure tastes good. Watch for Patrick Swayze as the team's leader and Keanu Reeves in his first film role as the French-Canadian goalie. The DVD's most entertaining feature is the option of watching Youngblood dubbed into French--not to be missed. --Ali Davis

Besides the Thunderbays, the Mustangs only played one other team. Are there no other challengers in that part of Canada? Good roles for Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, and Keanu Reeves, but a real bad story with its focus in the wrong place.
a great sports movie that delivers the action as much as it is inspiring.

Speaking of, I've always enjoyed Keanu's films, regardless of acting talent, but this is the only role of his I'd have eliminated from his film resume, simply awful. But Fionnula Flanagan and Cynthia Gibb are absolutely beautiful, and the good guy vs. bad guy scenario has always been a favorite of mine. Overall, a very decent sports film from the 80s.
