This film is just a glossy montage of explosions, shootings, and half-arsed stunts. Piss-poor, Rodriguez! You've made a piss-poor film, and no amount of Depp, Dafoe, Rourke, Banderas or Enrique bloody Iglesias can cover it up.
If you're tired of thinking and you just want to watch people die and stuff go "BOOM!" this movie works
Johnny Depp is humorous as usual and leads an all-star cast alongside Antonio Banderas in a great action movie!
I need to start by saying that I loved El Mariachi and Desperado, but this is just awful. Probably one of the worst pieces of garbage I have ever seen. There are rapid fire sequences of scenes that make no sense what-so-ever and then long, boring sequences of mariachis playing music that add nothing to the story at all.
I will say that a couple of scenes with Johnny Depp are worth watching, but that's about it.
This is one of only a small handful of movies I actually walked out on. In the theatre! I was bored out of my mind.
Critic Reviews
I understood the general outlines of the story, I liked the bold strokes he uses to create the characters, and I was amused by the camera work, which includes a lot of shots that are about themselves.full review
A noisy, unholy mess, with moments of wit and surprise that ultimately make its brutal tedium all the more disappointing.full review
Depp tosses off nearly as many deadpan quips as he did in Pirates and steals the movie from everyone else in the cast, including a rugged Antonio Banderas, who is perfect for the role of a man haunted by grief.full review
After a while, Once Upon a Time in Mexico starts having the same effect as one too many tequilas: the Hong Kong-style stunts, the goofy wisecracks, the foxy presence of Eva Mendes -- all of it becomes blurry and numbing.full review
Just as there are some sports teams you watch for the brilliant efforts of one star athlete, there are movies that rivet your attention when one performer is onscreen and go slack when he's gone.full review
Just sit back and let Rodriguez take you to popcorn-movie heaven.full review
