One of the best directed movies of all time, this is less a heist movie and more a character drama that features Al Pacino in peak form. Essential viewing.
Starring Al Pacino, this is a gripping fictionalized depiction of an actual bank robbery that happened in 1972. (NYT Critic's review: http://bit.ly/5UNQ2j)
Can't believe that this was based on a true story! Too absurd for a reality....
Arguably the finest Pacino performance. The film begins casually enough, before the suffocating confines of the bank stretch out the tension to breaking point. Pacino really nails the good guy with a naive plan.

While it was drawn out, much of the tension felt lost though nonetheless present for the most part. Among the top 10 best movies of all time? Ehh, I wouldn't say so, but still a well-made movie no matter its flaws. Al Pacino, namely, is the real attraction--excellent performance from start to end. Watchability due to length and some monotony, is low. It's a good rental simply to say you've seen it and acknowledged the good acting plus the fact that it was based on an actual event.
Just a prime example of how overrated Al Pacino is. Overracting by Pacino and a tedius progression made me lose interest fairly rapidly in this film. Based on true events is no excuse to not be creative.
Arguably the greatest bank robbery movie of all time. What makes it much more incredible is that the story is entirely true.

Al Pacino is one of Hollywood's finest actors and this is one of his finer performances. This is saying a lot considering the man has done The Godfather trilogy, Heat, Scent of a Woman, and more.
If you're looking for an unpredictable and entertaining heist film, Dog Day Afternoon is it.
A standard bearer for the hostage movie genre. Some of the better commentary points get lost as the film drags toward the ending.
It's awesome, and a true story to boot, and pacino goes nuts which is always great.
