Fast Eddie Felson is back in a way that no one could have expected. While it is a continuation of his story, it also manages to stand alone. However, it is not as powerful a story if you haven't seen The Hustler. Paul Newman deserves every bit of praise for his performance, it was in every way flawless.

The characters aren't interesting, the story isn't interesting and it's a pretty mediocre picture. The camera movement is way to agressive and the pool scenes looks fake almost botched up. So why am I giving this film three stars? Maybe because of Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Canadian actress Helen Shaver. They are very interesting in this film.

The whole film is either shouted or spoken in hushed tones, mostly the latter, making it very hard to follow and not at all "suspenseful". If you really really really like pool, then you will appreciate what little cinematography there was and the only "dynamic performance" came from Newman... no surprise there.
I was bored to tears 10 minutes in and ready to brain myself with a pool cue halfway through. It is mind numbingly boring and I do not recommend it.
"Cruise and Newman together at last and martin scorsese directing a great movie The Hustler was a classic, but these two actors light up the screen together brill thumbs up no doubt about it"
scorsese, tom cruise and newman, you should not be surpised at a quality product from this team, you expect the moon actually, it does deliver..but something is amiss...cant point on it , overall a great flick for all scorsese, cruise, newman fans !
Newman won an academy award as he gets back on top. Lots of fun especially if you saw the hustler
Paul Newman gives a good performance but after a while this film gets old. You can only shoot a pool stick hitting a ball so many times. At least you get to see Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio in all her glory.
Critic Reviews
It doesn't have the electricity, the wound-up tension, of [Scorsese's] best work, and as a result I was too aware of the story marching by.full review
