Really touching movie. Hayden Christensen does an okay job as the son, but considering that he's a central character that's not good enough, IMO. The script is fabulous, though, and the payoff is pretty good.

Life as a house was not an easy movie to watch. It had some unbearable sad scenes. George Monroe played by Kevin Kline, has terminal cancer. He decided to make the most of his remaining time on earth, building his dream house and bond with his trouble son Sam played by Hayden Christensen. This was a beautiful movie that dealt with real problems in life and the hope for changes. The directing by Irwin Winkler was just good, he did a great job. Everything about this movie was perfect and emotional. It made me laugh, cry, and appreciate life more each day.
Good acting help much avoiding this cliched story falling into another melodramatic box.

this had potential to be an excellent drama, but there is just something missing to take it over the average hump...

Sadly, Christensen is the only jolt of excitement in this turgid soap opera.full review
For a movie that's all about embracing life wholeheartedly, Life as a House sure does a good job of keeping its actors in check.full review
Elevated beyond its cutesy contrivances and mawkishness by some extraordinarily good performances.full review
