Mr. Libson is a math teacher, his wife is a rigid religious mother of five attractive teenage daughters who catch the eyes of the neighborhood boys. However, when 13-year-old Cecilia commits suicide, the family spirals downward into a creepy state of isolation and the remaining girls are quarantined from social interaction (particularly from the opposite sex) by their zealously protective mother. But the strategy backfires, their seclusion makes the girls even more intriguing to the obsessed boys who will go to absurd lengths for a taste of the forbidden fruit.

The first time I watched it. I was 11 and too young to understand, but I remember related to the story very well. Now after watching it a second time I can really appriciate the taste. Sofia Coppola is amazing amazing amazing.
Good soundtrack as always with the films of Sofia Coppola, and very well made film
weird title. even weirder content. nice ang twist sa last, coz all the of them (girls) died. murag klaro naman sad sa title. c: makes you value your virginity and your young life even more.
Pretty decent, though a some points it seemed very unrealistic. The filming was gorgeous and there were some very beautiful yet tragic parts. I hated all of the characters though and didn't feel one ounce of sympathy for them in the end.

We already know, just from reading the title, how it will end; thereby making it the film's responsibility to keep us entertained... it's a valiant effort for a debuting director, but still a costly error in the long run.
I am not a huge Sofia Coppola fan, however I was impressed with this. I cannot say I was completely satisfied, but it was very interesting and enjoyable.

I felt though that this objective treatment of the story might have been to a fault however, as my emotions were barely moved throughout. Our window into the story seems to have been primarily through the admiring boys of the neighborhood, but the vicarious experience provided by these characters was as objective and cold as the rest of the film. My biggest hangup with the film was that Kirsten Dunst's character seemed doomed to fail despite her having learned that innocence isn't everything. I feel that in spite of what happens to her sisters she should have survived. Maybe I am misinterpreting the story, but

A disarmingly poetic - and specifically female - vision of adolescence that it belongs in a category of its own.full review
More than most recent movies about suburban adolescence, The Virgin Suicides catches both the triviality and the grandeur of youth, its prosaic details and its mythopoetic flights.full review
[Coppola] has the courage to play it in a minor key. She doesn't hammer home ideas and interpretations. She is content with the air of mystery and loss that hangs in the air like bitter poignancy.full review
Sofia Coppola's adaptation of The Virgin Suicides ... captures the loveliest visuals and bits of language from Eugenides' book and faithfully, but not slavishly, transfers them to the screen.full review
