He's a self-professed music junkie who spends his days at Championship Vinyl with his two employees, Dick and Barry. Although they have an encyclopedic knowledge of pop music and are consumed with the music scene, it's of no help to Rob, whose needle skips the love groove when his long-time girlfriend, Laura, walks out on him. As he examines his failed attempts at romance and happiness, the process finds him being dragged, kicking and screaming, into adulthood.

Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable, or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?" Thus begins an iconic story and performance of the modern tendency towards glorification of pop-culture associated sentiment and relationship repetition. John Cusack is the charmingly roguish relationship repeater, doomed to repeat the same or similar fuck-ups in his relationships, until such time as he does something different. In meantime his emotional life is wholly given over to emoting to musical numbers that speak to him and making song collections to trade with his music-o-holic friends. Yes, this movie is one that almost every Baby Boomer on down to the most current crop can relate too, including the relationship repetitions. Fact is, what we don't resolve in one, we leave to work out in the next, as our hero repeatedly discovers. Jack Black is the stand-out for laughs, along with Tim Robbins. Cusack is Cusack, is almost always Cusack, and the big-hearted likable-fellow who needlessly turns to people as a refuge from his own decision-making fallibility seems to carry-over into all his roles. Over-praised as a film, it seems like it would work well as a sit-com rather cinema. As it is, the content speaks aptly enough, and it's pretty damn funny, if not discomforting for holding up a fairly accurate mirror.

All those "top 5" lists were getting old about half-way through, but otherwise a good film!

Sadly, I haven't red the book, but the storyline simply, kicks ass!! I loved the parts when Rob Gordon (John Cusack) was also kinda liek a narrator or sth. Great acting, JB was good as usual, nothing special, but not bad. One thing was the plot, another thing was the music. High Fidelity's soundtrack is simply awesome. To but it simply, it's a nother, must see movie!
Lovely, lovely movie about a man finally growing up in regards of his feelings and his job. Lots of music included!
