What an epically beautiful love story this is. I read and very much enjoyed the book by Charles Frazier & this film was a most wonderful adaptation of it. An extremely strong cast as well as supporting cast. There was not a single actor in this that did not wow me with their performance. It's a beautifully filmed movie with excellent cinematography and a more than solid storyline. This film takes 'love at first sight' to a completely deeper level. The ending is tragic and sad yet hopeful and wonderful all at the same time. The entire feel of this movie is just..right. The scenery and the soundtrack, along with everything else aforementioned, all add so much to this film. Absolutely beautiful.
"You are all that keeps me from sliding into some dark place."
A very good film.
The music, acting, costumes, cinematography, everything worked.
I kind of thought the supporting characters were more interesting than the two leads though, (I have Ruby and Sally in mind.)

All and all, a very satisfying movie that sticks with you and that I just love re-watching every so often.
this is just a blatant rip-off of 'the odyssey'. which is superior in everyway. read that instead.

The struggle to survive brings out the worst or best in everyone, which is based on a matter of personal choice and this resonates throughout the movie. I could accept the length of the movie, despite its slow pace, because that is what the characters were going through: the war and the journey home felt endless. What I didn't like was Nicole Kidman's forehead. She did what she could with the botox hampering her acting, but her expressiveness is nowhere near what she used to be able to do. I love Renee Zellwegger whenever she gets to showcase her skills beyond romantic roles, she really is a natural talent. And Jude Law is good as the haunted Southern gentleman who struggles to fight against the changes wrought in him and his fellow Americans by the war.
Very well done; can't believe I missed it the first time around. Couldn't believe everyone that was in it as well!
Critic Reviews
Something to mildly admire rather than embrace.full review
Cold is right -- Anthony Minghella's pretty, star-studded adaptation of the bestselling Civil War romance never makes it above freezing.full review
At 154 minutes, Cold Mountain is long and seems long, at times inspired, at times merely dutiful. But in most of the important ways, it succeeds.full review
Law's performance ... sustains us throughout the movie, just as love sustains Inman during his long separation from Ada.full review
Good, sometimes thrilling, but it's less a war epic than an evocative romantic melodrama with a patchy first hour.full review
As they might have said in the old days, this sweeping historical romance is one heck of a classy picture which is both its great virtue and its limitation.full review
It evokes a backwater of the Civil War with rare beauty, and lights up with an assortment of colorful supporting characters.full review
