Chas started buying real estate in his early teens and seemed to have had a preternatural understanding of international finance. Margot was a playwright and received a Braverman grant of fifty thousand dollars in the ninth grade. Richie was a junior champion tennis player and won the U.S. Nationals three years in a row. Virtually all memory of the brilliance of the young Tenenbaums was subsequently erased by two decades of betrayal, failure and disaster. Most of this was generally considered to be their father's fault. The tale follows the family's sudden and unexpected reunion one recent winter.

Another obsessive compulsive flick by Wes Anderson where each character has no doubt been intricately developed down to what kind of nickers they wear. Don't miss the gorilla paintings behind Owen Wilson. Brilliant and worth watching a million times.
A paean to outcasts & misfits and the extended families they build in order to get thru this thing called "LIFE".

It starts and ends exceptionally, but perhaps drags a little in its middle chapters. Still, a really fine comedy/drama.

While I am not a huge fan of Wilson the actor, Wilson the writer is definitely good, especially when he teams up with Anderson. The acting overall in the film was excellent, probably the best ensemble cast of the 2001 films. Gwyneth Paltrow was especially good as the moody and quiet Margot but it was Gene Hackman as Royal that stole every scene. His transformation from selfish rich man to a caring grandfather was amazing. One of the best films from 2001.
The plot is a lot tighter than Life Aquatic or Darjeeling, however not as great as Rushmore. One of Anderson's best.
A well done movie by Wes Anderson with his unique style. As with most of his movies I have seen he focuses on family strife and relationships. The movie has great dialogue, stories and situations and is overall entertaining. Though it is not his best... (read more) A well done movie by Wes Anderson with his unique style. Good cast and shot well but the lack of charisma and chemsitry was there too much for me. Dull, nonsense and the plot lack the weight to grab you. Disappointed in what is often refered to as an offbeat comedy classic, more of a dull characterless movie in my eyes. A let down.
Critic Reviews
Apart from Hackman, the actors look more trapped by Anderson's rigid framing, color scheme, and enforced deadpan.full review
A rich mixture of sadness, comfort and joy.full review
It's proof that Anderson and his writing partner, the actor Owen Wilson, have a gift of cockeyed genius.full review
That it works is due to director Wes Anderson, who has made something eccentric and hilarious that can suddenly -- or maybe not for hours or even days later -- choke you up with emotion.full review
The film grows on you, but more substance and less calculated quirks would have been a royal treat.full review
Rushmore director Wes Anderson is more interested in his own precocity than he is in his characters.full review
At once endearing and unbearably show-offy, it seems to be the product of a sensibility formed by age-inappropriate reading: a childhood spent sneaking into the grown-up fiction section of the library.full review
