Shrewdly, Castro also unlocks the overpacked prisons, allowing hordes of criminals to join the refugees. Tony Montana, a small time hood, is one of them. In Florida, Montana connects with gangster Frank Lopez, and guns his way through the sun washed streets of Miami where he finds power, wealth and passion. He kills Lopez and marries his mistress, Elvira. Montana, better known as "Scarface," soon becomes the leader of a bloody cocaine-smuggling empire but at a terrible cost to his sister, Gina and his loyal friend, Manny. However, like that of others before him, Montana's reign is brief and a violent end is guaranteed as rival gangster compete to become the next drug lord.

Ah, the macho-bullshit epic, a movie for the coke-head who doesn't like movies.

Also, when watching it as an 80's kid, Tony Montana was almost a folk hero. Now, I watch the movie and I see him for the greedy psychopath he really was, a bastardization of the American dream. Does that detract from enjoying the film? A little bit but overall, this is still DePalma's masterpiece and an excellent script by Oliver Stone. My favorite castmember will always be Steven Bauer, who was never quite as ruthless, as bloodthirsty, as Pacino. He had just enough of a heart to truly care about the people in his life and in the end, paid dearly for it.
alleen voor het acteren van Al Pacino, voor de rest maar ne matige film eigenlijk
Amazing film. About a Cuban who comes to america, becomes a drug dealler and slowly moves up in the buisness.

Still, the pull of the of the story and its narrative is all the more impressive, considering that Tony Montana is far from a sympathetic character. One final tip: do not plan any surprises, even nice ones, for a guy who is already pathologically paranoid...
I still wonder how this movie became cult. pacino does the worst latino accent of all time!
Critic Reviews
A slyly ironic vision of America's still-thriving meritocracy.full review
What were Pacino's detractors hoping for? Something internal and realistic? Low key? The Tony Montana character is above all a performance artist, a man who exists in order to gloriously be himself.full review
