From the bachelor Prime Minister of the United Kingdom who, on his first day at 10 Downing Street, falls in love with the girl who brings him his tea, to a hopeless sandwich delivery guy who doesn't think he has a chance with the girls in the U.K., so he heads for Wisconsin. From aging rock stars, to a stony headmistress, to a monolingual Portuguese housemaid--love arrives in many forms, shapes and sizes. Here, ten separate--but intertwining--stories of love all lead up to a big climax on Christmas Eve, proving that love is the driving force in all of these people's lives.

Could've been longer. I really loved it, though. It made me squeal like a little girl at moments. Yeah...

Goodness knows I laughed plenty and cried (well, got teary eyed) almost as much... because this movie is just teeming with comedy, sweetness, and character, and I really do love it. Hugh Grant's charming (one of the best bits is when he sings a Christmas carol with his security service guy), Laura Linney's gracious as fuck (as always), Rodrigo Santoro's sexy as fuck (as always), Liam Neeson is the best father ever (although watching this movie after his real life wife's death is just excruciating :C), that adorable little kid gets one of the best epic chase scenes in recent memory, Rowan Atkinson takes his time in two of the most memorable cameos ever, Alan Rickman's... well... Alan Rickman, Colin Firth marches a crowd of clueless Portugese folks through the streets, Martin Freeman is all cute and awkward while massaging a girl's tits, and Bill Nighy realizes that he loves his manager after telling kids never to buy drugs because if they become famous, quote, "they give them to you for free!" It's a great, big, sloppy, corny, beautiful, sappy, hilarious film. So why the 3.5?
Basically: no gay storyline. What the fuck? It even teases you into thinking that there is one, and then there isn't (being replaced by a much lamer heterosexual storyline that suffers from an utter lack of resolution by the end). Pretty disappointing. And Keira Knightley kissing that guy was just stupid, because there's absolutely no reason to root for them as a couple; her actual husband seems perfectly fine, as does their relationship!
Other problems with the plot: both Alan Rickman's and Laura Linney's storylines end on a major down note. Which might be excusable in any other film, but not in a film as ridiculously cheesy as this one.
Here's how they should have done it:
1) Make the audience think that Keira's husband's best friend is actually in love with Keira from the start. Do this by having Laura Linney at the wedding ask him, "you like her, don't you?" Then, have the wedding tape show that he was focusing entirely on his friend. The twist would be just as effective and would give the film a needed dose of homosexual love. So the gay guy suffers while he sees his best friend happily married.
2) Make Alan Rickman single. (Sorry Emma Thompson, you're great, but not needed in this particular film.) Have him try to help Laura Linney's character get with Karl.
3) It doesn't work because Karl is gay. Laura Linney is really sad. She tells Alan Rickman about it, but you know what, it's okay, because Alan Rickman's all like, "I LOVE YOU I HAVE HAD A MAJOR CRUSH ON YOU FOR A WHILE NOW" and they fall in love.
4) Meanwhile, Karl meets Keira's husband's gay best friend, and THEY fall in love and have gay sex on Christmas eve.
See? Perfect movie.
3.5/5 -_-
And yes I realize how much of a loser this makes me. Sigh.
Pleasantly surprised by how much I liked it. Grab a date and snuggle up on the couch to this one.
This movie was the cutest! I loved the little boy Sam! The cast way great!! I want to buy it!
Sugar .Candy.Sweet....some of the words that can describe this film.Great Script and has many memorable moments .A must see for the mush- lovers.
Tops my list .
This movie is so lovely - I've seen it many times & still want to see it again.
Love it... it's not the best movie out there, but honestly, I feel that it's pretty darn good.
I'm rating this mostly of enjoyment. This movie makes you feel!
i can think of many ways to spend my time more wisely than reliving said event.
What a great, feel good movie. Loved the entire cast and enjoyed the fact it was set in England. Great movie to sit down with friends around a fire and just feel good about the people you have in your life over the holidays.
turned out to be not what I expected at all. very good, slightly sad, porn shooting was amusing. Liam Neeson's storyline in the film ended up shadowing his real life story line a bit... very sad.
Critic Reviews
It's terrific fun for an hour, but by the last of its 129 minutes you might find yourself going into insulin shock.full review
There are no fewer than nine interlocking and overlapping love stories in Richard Curtis' deadly epic sprawl of a romantic comedy, Love Actually. By the end of the movie, that's nine too many.full review
It's no hardship whatsoever to sit through Love Actually ... But if Curtis could have sharpened his focus, and trusted his actors a bit more, Love Actually could have been splendid.full review
The movie's only flaw is also a virtue: It's jammed with characters, stories, warmth and laughs, until at times Curtis seems to be working from a checklist of obligatory movie love situations and doesn't want to leave anything out.full review
A warm, benevolent comedy whose characters gradually become your dear friends.full review
Feel-good schmaltz creeps into every nook and cranny of writer/director Richard Curtis's Love Actually.full review
