Inspired by a fiercely independent mother who insisted he make his own way in the world, Charles found his calling and his gift behind a piano keyboard. Touring across the Southern musical circuit, the soulful singer gained a reputation and then exploded with worldwide fame when he pioneered incorporating gospel, country, jazz and orchestral influences into his inimitable style. As he revolutionized the way people appreciated music, he simultaneously fought segregation in the very clubs that launched him and championed artists' rights within the corporate music business.

Amazing acting skills of Jamie Foxx, gripping story and... unfortunately too much hollywood.
Whatever, another glorified junkie had a movie made about him. Jamie Foxx still annoys me.
Man, heavy story...wonderfully adapted, with near-perfect acting. Personally, I liked the flashback scenes more than the actual story (that scene where Ray as a boy falls and his mother doesn't do anything? DUDE!), and there were points when it felt ... Personally, I liked the flashback scenes more than the actual story (that scene where Ray as a boy falls and his mother doesn't do anything? Edit: Forgettable.
AWSOME
This movie is great tho Ray Charles himself picked Jamie Foxx to portray him .. He knew something in him that it would be magic
Features an amazing performance by Foxx, some good music, but not much else. Most of the film is quite dull and boring.
Jamie Foxx did a great job. Good movie, definitely deserved its praise
Critic Reviews
It takes all of five seconds, tops, to believe that Jamie Foxx is the young Ray Charles.full review
The music is inspired and the cast terrifically committed, but Ray is still a long way from being a good movie.full review
The movie would be worth seeing simply for the sound of the music and the sight of Jamie Foxx performing it. That it looks deeper and gives us a sense of the man himself is what makes it special.full review
It's a shame about Ray, because Foxx is trapped in a movie that takes the music icon's unique story and turns it into cheesy, sentimental American Dream cliches.full review
Despite a plodding, mechanical approach to dramatizing his life, Ray occasionally hits peaks of energy and delight worthy of his finest songs.full review
Taylor Hackford's biography of Ray Charles is a potent and invigorating portrait of genius, thanks to Jamie Foxx's performance and to the music of Ray Charles himself.full review
Foxx's mannered performance fails to convey the complexities beneath Charles's trademark twitches.full review
Jamie Foxx gets so far inside the man and his music that he and Ray Charles seem to breathe as one.full review
